How Do The Markets Usually Perform in January?
December and January form a lethal (in a good way) one-two combination when it comes to historical stock market performance.
We've covered the historical performance of the markets in December on this site before. For a quick recap - the DJIA is historically up 1.42% in December, the S&P 500 is historically up 1.64%, and the NASDAQ is historically up 1.87%.
How about January?
Here are the numbers:
DJIA - +1.1%
S&P 500 - +1.08%
NASDAQ - +2.87%
January is another historically strong month for the markets, with the NASDAQ putting in an especially impressive performance.
Based on historical numbers, the "Santa Claus rally" usually spills over into January, making for two of the best months of the year.
