How Have The Markets Done After Inflation Since The End of WWII?




Dow Jones Nasdaq and S&P 500 Logos Earlier this weekend, one of the readers of this site asked me to break down the inflation-adjusted returns of the DJIA (Dow Jones Industrial Average), S+P 500 and NASDAQ since the end of World War II.

Let's start with the DJIA.

From 1946-2009 (64 years), the Dow Jones Industrial Average has increased by an average of 7.68% per year.

However, after accounting for inflation, this return dips to just 3.69%.

Next up - the NASDAQ. We started in 1972, which was when the NASDAQ traded for an entire year for the first time.

From 1972 to 2009, the NASDAQ has increased by an average of 11.76% per year.

After adjusting for inflation, this number dips to 7.24%.
