Massive Popularity of Kindle Leads to Surge in Ebook Purchases

According to Amazon.com, more of their customers purchased Ebooks than physical books on Christmas Day.

This is the first time that this has ever happened.

The Kindle is a phenomenally popular reading device that has become the "most gifted item" in the history of Amazon.com, according to founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.

Given the sheer number of people who received a Kindle as a present this holiday season, it's not THAT surprising to hear that Ebooks outsold physical books on Amazon.com on Christmas Day.

I mean, I would imagine that practically everyone who received a Kindle as a present bought some sort of an ebook from Amazon.com on December 25th. Amazon makes it so easy to purchase eBooks through the Kindle, and people just can't seem to keep their hands off of the device.

Given this information, there was obviously a surge of Ebook activity on Christmas Day due to everyone receiving their Kindles.

While it may be a while before Ebooks outsell physical books on Amazon.com once again, the trend is clear - many people are passing on the purchase of physical books in favor of eBooks that are purchased through their wireless electronic reading devices.

I know of at least a dozen people that received Kindles this holiday season. Across the board, their reaction was "I'll never read a normal book again."

Expect this trend to continue into the future, and expect the day to come when eBooks routinely outsell physical books on Amazon.com.
