Prior to Netflix: Hastings' first job was selling vacuums door to door. Hastings did this job for a year before he entered Bowdoin College.
Hastings' first job after finishing his education was at Adaptive Technology.
Hastings left Adaptive Technology in 1991 to start his own company, Pure Software. Pure Software "produced products to troubleshoot software".
Pure Software went public in 1995 and merged with Atria Software in 1996. The combined company, Pure Atria, was acquired by Rational Software in 1997. Hastings left soon after the acquisition had been completed.
Shortly after leaving Pure Atria/Rational Software, Hastings founded Netflix with Marc Randolph. Netflix was founded in 1997, and Hastings was named as the company's CEO in 1998.

-Hastings served as a high school math teacher in Swaziland during his time with the US Peace Corps
-Hastings recently was involved in a public back-and-forth with Whitney Tilson, founder and managing partner of T2 Partners LLC. Tilson has a short position in NFLX and feels that the company is overvalued, and Hastings disagrees.
