What is an "absentee ballot"? What is the definition of the term "absentee ballot"?

An "absentee ballot" is a ballot that is cast by somebody who is not able (or willing) to attend a polling station to cast their vote.

An "absentee ballot", for instance, may be cast by somebody who is physically unable to make it to the polling station. Or, in another circumstance, an absentee ballot may be cast by somebody who is travelling and will not be home in time to cast a ballot.

In the United States, absentee ballots are usually cast through the mail. In most states (28 at last count), an excuse is not needed to cast an absentee ballot.
