Evan Williams is a serial entrepreneur.
Evan Williams co-founded Pyra Labs, which ended up spawning Blogger, which was eventually acquired by Google back in 2003. The amount that Google paid for Blogger was never disclosed, but it stands to reason that the purchase made Evan Williams a very rich man. Rich enough, surely, to never have to work another day in his life.
Evan Williams, though, loves creating and building companies.
Following the Blogger acquisition, Williams, along with Biz Stone, Jack Dorsey and others, formed the Obvious Corporation in October of 2006. Obvious Corporation purchased the assets of Odeo, which was a podcasting company that was co-founded by Noah Glass and Williams. Included in the purchase were the assets of Twitter, which had been initially developed by Jack Dorsey and contractor Florian Weber. Twitter was eventually spun off as its own company in 2007.
Evan Williams served as Twitter's CEO until October 4th, 2010. Williams now spends most of his time working at his new venture, Medium, which he co-founded with Biz Stone in August of 2012.
Williams has invested personally in a number of different ventures, including Everfi, Milk and Typeset.
Williams reportedly owns a 15% stake in Twitter, which makes him the company's largest single shareholder.
Assuming that Twitter has a value of $15 billion when it goes public in 2013, this would give Williams a minimum net worth of $2.25 billion. Even without his Twitter stake, Williams is assumedly a very wealthy man stemming from the sale of Blogger to Google.
Williams had plenty of opportunities to unload most or all of his stake in Twitter in the secondary market, but he chose to hold tight to his position. This move will likely end up paying off handsomely for Williams.
