Information:

Jon Gruden, known affectionately as "Chucky", is known to practically every person in the world who has watched "Monday Night Football" over the past decade or so.

Gruden, who is the former head coach of both the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, parlayed his successful coaching career (he did win a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers, after all) into a well paying career as a color analyst. Gruden is frequently mentioned as a possibility for every vacant head coaching position in the NFL, but as you will see, Gruden makes too much money from ESPN to leave.

Gruden, who was born on August 17th, 1963, attended the University of Dayton during his final three years of college. During his time with the school, Gruden served as the back-up quarterback for the team but didn't see much action. The time with the school was fruitful for Gruden, however, as he ended up graduating with his degree.

After his graduation, Gruden sought to become involved in the world of coaching and took a number of jobs en route to landing in the NFL. Here is Gruden's progression from a graduate assistant coach to head coach in the NFL:

-graduate assistant coach at the University of Tennessee
-quarterbacks coach at Southeast Missouri State
-tight ends coach at the University of the Pacific
-special assistant to the quarterbacks coach with the San Francisco 49ers
-wide receiver coach at the University of Pittsburgh
-special offensive assistant/wide receivers coach with the Green Bay Packers
-offensive co-ordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles

After spending time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Gruden was officially hired as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders for the 1998 season.

Gruden's time with the Oakland Raiders was fruitful, as he led the team to a record of 38-26 and an appearance in the AFC Championship game (where they eventually lost to the Baltimore Ravens). At the end of the 2001 season, Gruden was a hot commodity who had one year left on his deal with the Raiders. Rather than re-sign him, Al Davis decided to deal Gruden to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a number of first-round and second-round draft picks, as well as $8 million in cash. Gruden would eventually sign a 5 year, $17.5 million deal with the Buccaneers.

Gruden would end up leading the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory (Super Bowl XXXVII), which cemented Gruden's standing as one of the top coaches in the game. The team, however, suffered in the years after, mainly due to the fact that they had lost a number of key draft picks in the trade that brought Gruden to the Buccaneers. In addition, the team suffered from salary cap issues for a number of years.

After a couple of uneven years with the team, Gruden signed a three-year contract extension in 2008, only to be fired a year later.

Gruden's career with "Monday Night Football" began in 2009 when he was hired to be the color analyst. Gruden quickly won fans over with his knowledge of the game and overall enthusiastic demeanor. The former head coach has been a mainstay on the program ever since.

Gruden, who compiled a record of 95-81 as a head coach, is often mentioned as a possibility for any vacant coaching position in the NFL and college football. The fact of the matter, however, is that Gruden does very well with ESPN after having signed contract extensions in 2012 and 2014. According to reports, Gruden reportedly receives $6.5 million per year to serve as the color analyst on Monday Night Football.

With his position with MNF, Gruden is able to be fully immersed in the game of football without having to deal with the pressures of being a head coach. Throw in the $6.5 million/year salary and there is virtually no chance that you will ever see Gruden serving as a coach ever again.
