The UFC (aka the Ultimate Fighting Championship) is one of the most exciting sports in the world to watch.

With UFC and mixed martial arts in general, you just never know what is going to happen in a fight. Regardless of how favored a fighter is to win, an entire fight can shift on just one punch or kick. A single right cross might stun a champion, leading to a stoppage. A desperate high kick may result in a knockout, or an unexpected submission may result in a stoppage.

With the UFC growing in popularity over the last number of years, the popularity of the UFC as a sport to bet on has also grown. Any sports book that is worth mentioning is now offering odds on the UFC, and that is a good thing.

For the knowledgeable sports bettor, gambling on mixed martial arts fighting offers some tremendous opportunity, especially in the fights on the prelim cards. There is usually at least one major upset on the prelim card - a person with a deep knowledge of the fighters on the lower cards can exploit the gulf between the line that the sports books set fights at and the actual line based on the skills of the two fighters. While many people will choose to wager on the likes of Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey, a tremendous amount of value presents itself in this preliminary cards.

One of my favourite sports books for betting on the UFC is Bet365, as they offer a 100% bonus when you sign up and deposit on the site. The sign-up process is extremely efficient and easy - if you are looking to put some money down on a fight, chances are that you will be ready to go in less than five minutes. As a matter of fact, I recently signed up for an account and went from sign-up to betting in approximately three minutes.

Bet365 offers a wide range of different betting types on UFC fights that we will cover in the next paragraph.

The most common bet type on a UFC fight is the Straight Up Winner wager. For instance, a line for a fight between Conor McGregor and Chad Mendes might look like this:

Conor McGregor, -220
Chad Mendes, +180

In this case, a successful $220 wager on Conor McGregor would yield a total return of $100, while a successful $100 bet on Chad Mendes would return a total profit of $180.

As you can see, Conor McGregor would be the favourite to win in this fight.

Now, you can also bet on how long the fight will take. Let’s say that McGregor vs Mendes is a championship fight that is not expected to last a long time. The over/under rounds line might look like this:

Under 1.5 Rounds, -200
Over 1.5 Rounds, +170

In this case, the fight is expected to last less than 1 1/2 rounds, largely thanks to the power of Conor McGregor. If you decided to bet on the over and the fight went past 1 1/2 rounds, you would win $17 in profit for every $10 that you wagered.

You can also bet on who will win and in what round. For instance, Conor McGregor may have odds like this for his fight against Mendes:

McGregor Wins in Round 1, +105
McGregor Wins in Round 2, -175
McGregor Wins in Round 3, +110
McGregor Wins in Round 4, +220
McGregor Wins in Round 5, +475
McGregor Wins By Decision, +770

There would also be a matching set of lines for Chad Mendes in this fight. If you are fairly sure as to when a fight will end, betting on these lines can be fairly lucrative.

You can only bet on HOW the fight will end. For instance:

Conor McGregor Wins by KO, TKO or Disqualification, -225
Conor McGregor Wins by Submission, +300
Conor McGregor Wins by Decision or Technical Decision, +900

These are the most popular types of wagers for mixed martial arts fights.

There are various things that you should be aware of when wagering on a mixed martial arts fight that will likely bring you more success:

1) Weight cuts matter. Did a fighter miss weight? Did they look aggravated on the scales? Did they look very drawn out? If so, this will be a point in the favour of their opponent. If you can’t decide who to wager on, check out their weight cuts - you may find an advantage there.

2) Momentum matters. There is a certain mystique that fighters on long winning streaks have - their opponents will likely be tentative and apprehensive, and this will play into the hands of the fighter on a long winning streak.

3) Styles matter. Strong wrestling is very hard to overcome in mixed martial arts. If a strong wrestler is going up against a strong striker, the strong wrestler will almost certainly have the advantage, as they will likely be able to take the fight to the ground to neutralize the striker.

Betting on mixed martial arts should be fun, so bet accordingly.

Having said that, there is nothing like watching a big fight with some friends when you have some money on the line.

Best of luck!
