What do the following companies all have in common?

Paypal
Tesla Motors
Zip2
SolarCity
SpaceX

The answer - all five companies were either founded or co-founded by Elon Musk, who is one of the most interesting (and intelligent) people walking the face of the Earth today.

As a matter of fact, Robert Downey, Jr. based the "Tony Stark" character from Iron Man on Musk, and it's not hard to see why.

Most people would be happy to retire to a sandy beach after selling their company for hundreds of millions of dollars. Musk's first company, Zip2, was bought by Compaq's Altavista division in 1999 for roughly $340 million. Musk was a phenomenally wealthy man after the acquisition closed, and he could have easily disappeared into a life of comfortable obscurity.

This is not how Elon Musk is wired, however, and he soon co-founded the company that would eventually become Paypal.com. Musk hit the jackpot once again when Ebay acquired Paypal.com for $1.5 billion in July of 2002. Musk's stake in Paypal was valued at $175 million following the Ebay acquisition.

Musk used his growing wealth to start another company, SpaceX. SpaceX is a space transport company that became the first private company to ever send a cargo payload to the International Space Station. Elon has reportedly put $100 million of his own money into SpaceX. Google Inc. and Fidelity Investments, as well as others, invested $1 billion into Space Exploration Technologies Corp. According to reports, SpaceX now has a valuation of over $30 billion based on the most recent funding rounds.

According to reports, Musk still owns a more than 50% stake in SpaceX. Musk is reportedly mulling over the possibility of taking SpaceX public.

Musk's entrepreneurial activity doesn't stop there.

Elon Musk also co-founded Tesla Motors, which is a "company that designs, manufactures and sells electric cars and electric vehicle powertrain components." Musk, who is CEO and Product Architect, currently owns 34,102,560 shares of the company. In addition, he has options to buy 4,748,110 more.

Similar to SpaceX, Musk has sunk an incredible amount of money into Tesla Motors. According to Musk, he is not going anywhere, and his "money will be the last out of the company."

--

Musk, who is still in his 40s, has no plans to stifle his innovative spirit anytime soon.

--

Elon Musk is not afraid to throw himself (and his wealth) into his companies. Musk's impact on the world has already been massive and he seems to be just getting started.

Musk is known to borrow against his stakes in Tesla and SpaceX and has admitted as such in the past. Musk uses his valuable ownership stakes in Tesla and SpaceX to borrow to fund his day-to-day expenses and funding of new ventures such as Neuralink and the Boring Company.

Neuralink and the Boring Company are newer ventures that are harder to value.

Note: during a recent defamation trial (which he won), Musk agreed that his net worth was "about $20 billion".

Update: With shares of Tesla spiking in December and early January of 2020, Elon's net worth has continued to soar, along with the net worth's of all other Tesla shareholders, institutional or otherwise.
