Alex Karp
01Overview
Our base-case estimate of Alex Karp's net worth is $17.4 billion. Almost all of it is Palantir, the data-analytics and defense software company he co-founded in 2003 and has run since 2005. He owns 59.3 million Palantir shares, worth $11.7 billion at the October 28, 2026 close of $196.81, and holds about 38 million vested stock options worth another $4.3 billion at intrinsic value after an assumed tax. The rest is an assumption for the cash left from about $3.5 billion of stock sales, plus about $217 million of property bought since 2025. The estimate is before any personal borrowing: 3 million of his shares are pledged as collateral for personal debt arrangements, and the amount, if any, is not disclosed (proxy, April 2026).
From 2015, when he first made Forbes' billionaires list, through 2024, Forbes' annual list put him at $1.1 billion to $2.9 billion. Then the stock took off. Palantir joined the S&P 500 in September 2024, and its shares are up more than twentyfold from their $9.50 close on the first day of trading in September 2020, carrying his fortune into the top tier of American wealth.
The published estimates are higher than ours. Forbes had him at $21.0 billion on October 28, 2026 and the Bloomberg Billionaires Index at $21.9 billion. The differences may reflect how options and cash are valued and other choices of method. Bloomberg's published parts do not add up to its total, so we cannot fully reconcile it. Every $10 move in Palantir's share price changes our estimate by about $0.82 billion.
| Born | October 1967, New York City; raised near Philadelphia |
| Age | 59 |
| Residence | Lyman, New Hampshire (Forbes); also homes in Colorado and Miami Beach |
| Source of wealth | Palantir Technologies, which he co-founded in 2003 and has led as CEO since 2005 |
| Largest holding | 59,260,159 Palantir shares across Class A, B and F, plus about 38 million vested options |
02Reconcile the Estimate
Karp must report changes in his Palantir holdings on Form 4 within two business days, so his share count is one of the best documented of any big fortune: Class A and B shares held in his own name1, Class F shares in the founders' voting trust2 with the same economic rights3, and vested options4. What is harder to see is how much of the roughly $3.5 billion he has raised from selling stock since 2020 is still in the bank, and how much he has borrowed against his shares.

| Palantir Class F sharesDisclosed | 335,000 shares, his third of the 1,005,000 in the Founder Voting Trust2. Same economic rights as Class A and B and convertible into Class B3, x $196.81 | $0.07B |
| Vested stock optionsModeled | About 38,025,000 options at $11.38 a share, our count from the vesting schedule4. Intrinsic value (share price less exercise price) $7.1 billion before tax at $196.81, less an assumed 39.4% tax on exercise | $4.27B |

|---|---|---|
| Unvested options and restricted stock units | 66,975,000 options and 18,525,000 RSUs that vest each quarter through May 20314; about $16.1 billion before tax at $196.81, but only if he stays at Palantir | $16.07B |
| Tax we assume on the vested options | 39.4% of their value before tax; exercising them is taxed as ordinary income | $2.78B |
| Personal borrowing | The proxy says 3,000,000 Class A shares secure personal debt arrangements2. Amount undisclosed; not deducted, so the estimate is before any such borrowing | Not deducted |
| Homes without reported prices | A farm in Lyman, New Hampshire, and other homes he has mentioned have no reported prices | Not valued |
Palantir at the October 28, 2026 close of $196.81 for every share class; vested options at intrinsic value (that price less the $11.38 exercise price) after an assumed 39.4% tax; cash as a scenario assumption; property at cost; no deduction for undisclosed personal borrowing. Two selected scenarios: $16.2 billion assumes none of his after-tax sale proceeds are left beyond the homes; $21.9 billion counts the vested options before tax and uses the Bloomberg index's $3.15 billion of cash, which includes his homes. Actual wealth could fall outside them.
Not observable: how much of his after-tax sale proceeds he still has and how it is invested; how much he has borrowed against his pledged shares; the prices of homes not reported in the press; and whether he exercises or sells more stock after October 28, 2026 (his trading plan adopted March 12, 2026 allows up to about 7 million more shares to be sold through December 12, 2026)6.
What if Palantir's stock price changes?
The share count is all three classes, 59,260,159 shares. Everything else, our $1.2 billion cash assumption plus about $0.22 billion of property, is held constant. Undisclosed personal borrowing is not deducted.

Bloomberg's profile breaks its figure into $11.7 billion of Palantir stock and $3.15 billion of cash, adjusted for taxes and including his homes5. The remaining $7.05 billion is not itemized. Bloomberg says it counts about 27.5 million vested options as of May 2026, which would be about $5.1 billion before tax at $196.81, so options alone may not explain the rest; we cannot fully reconcile its total. For comparison, our base case counts about 38 million vested options at intrinsic value after an assumed 39.4% tax ($4.3 billion), and $7.1 billion before tax. Forbes does not publish a breakdown. Its 2026 Forbes 400 figure used stock prices from September 4, 2026.

09Background
Karp is an unusual technology founder. He studied philosophy at Haverford, law at Stanford and then social theory in Frankfurt, where he wrote a doctoral thesis on aggression and culture. Before Palantir he ran a small investment firm in London, Caedmon Group, managing money for wealthy clients. Peter Thiel, a Stanford Law classmate, brought him in to run Palantir, which was built to sell data-analysis software to intelligence agencies and the military and later to companies.
He has been chief executive since 2005, according to Palantir's filings. Palantir stayed private for 17 years and lost money for most of them; Karp's stake was worth a billion or two on paper, but there was little way to sell it.
10How the Stake Is Held
Three share classes
Palantir has three classes of common stock. Class A trades on the Nasdaq and has one vote. Class B has ten votes and converts into Class A one-for-one, which is how Karp sells: he converts Class B shares and sells them as Class A, so his Class A count has stayed at 6,432,258 since November 20211. Class F, held only by Karp, Thiel and Cohen through a voting trust, has a floating number of votes that keeps the founders at just under half of Palantir's voting power as long as they hold at least 100 million shares between them2. Class F has the same economic rights as the other classes3, so we value it at the share price.
The 2020 award
Just before the 2020 listing, Palantir granted Karp an option on 141 million Class B shares at $11.38 and 39 million restricted stock units, both vesting in 40 equal quarterly installments from August 20214. His 2020 pay, almost all of it this award, was valued at about $1.1 billion at the time. At the October 28, 2026 price it is worth vastly more: he has exercised 36 million of the options, about 38 million more are vested, and the rest vest through May 2031. He received no new stock awards from 2021 through 2025; his 2025 pay of $8.6 million was a $1.1 million salary plus security, aircraft, tax services and a $2.39 million antitrust filing fee Palantir paid for him.
11Selling Stock
From the September 2020 listing through August 2026, Karp sold about 101 million Palantir shares for about $3.49 billion before tax, by our count of his 58 Form 4 filings6. Bloomberg puts it at more than $3 billion. Most of that came in two bursts. In 2020 and 2021 he exercised nearly 69 million old options priced at 10 cents and 85 cents a share and sold about $1.05 billion of stock across the two years. In late 2024, as the shares surged around the S&P 500 inclusion and the presidential election, he exercised 36 million of his $11.38 options and sold about $1.86 billion of stock from September to November under a trading plan adopted in December 2023 ($1.95 billion for the full year).
From 2025 through August 2026 he mostly sold only the shares needed to cover the tax when his restricted stock vests each quarter. A plan adopted December 11, 2024 that allowed up to 9,975,000 more shares to be sold, less shares sold for tax, and was widely reported as a $1 billion sale, was ended on March 10, 2025 without any sales under it. His plan adopted March 12, 2026 allows up to 7,080,177 shares to be sold through December 12, 2026; 90,000 had been sold under it by August 20, 20266.
12Property
For years Karp was known for working from a barn on his New Hampshire farm. His spending on property took off in 2025. In June a company later identified as his bought a waterfront house on San Marino Island in Miami Beach for $46 million, a record for the neighborhood, and in April 2026 the house next door was reported sold for $28.5 million, giving him a compound of about $75 million. In December 2025 he was reported to have paid $120 million, according to the Wall Street Journal, for the St. Benedict's Monastery property, about 3,700 acres in the Capitol Creek Valley near Aspen. In September 2026 it was reported that a new Swedish company he owns, Cladonia Skog AB, had bought about 15,000 hectares of forest in Harjedalen for SEK 235 million, about $22 million, and added about 300 hectares in October. Palantir itself moved its headquarters from Denver to the Miami area (Aventura) in February 2026.
13How We Model the Cash
His $3.49 billion of stock sales, split by kind of sale using the footnotes on each Form 4, because each is taxed differently. Figures are rounded. This is a scenario assumption, not a reconstruction of his actual taxes and remaining assets.
| Kind of sale | Sold, before tax | What we assume he kept |
|---|---|---|
| Option exercise and sale, September-November 2024: 36 million options at $11.38 (plus about 570,000 other shares sold under the same plan). The spread over the exercise price is ordinary income, taxed at an assumed 39.4% | $1.84B | $0.86B (after $0.41B exercise cost and $0.56B tax) |
| Sales to cover tax on vesting stock, August 2021 to August 2026. His Form 4s say these were automatic sales to cover tax withholding | $0.52B | $0 |
| Trading-plan sales of vested stock, 2023-2024 and February and August 2026. Assumed 23.8% tax on the whole amount (cost basis not modeled, so this overstates the tax) | $0.11B | $0.08B |
| Other sales, September 2020 to 2021: shares he held at the listing and the 2020-2021 exercise and sale of the old options. The filings do not give his cost basis in the held shares or the tax on exercised options he kept, so the tax cannot be fully reconstructed | $1.02B | $0.51B (assumption: half) |
| Less: cost of exercising the old options in 2020-2021 | -$0.01B | |
| Less: property with reported prices, counted separately at cost | -$0.22B | |
| Spending, gifts and investment gains or losses | Unknown, not modeled | |
| Cash and investments (scenario assumption) | $3.49B | $1.23B |
Our low scenario assumes none of this cash is left beyond the homes; the high scenario uses Bloomberg's $3.15 billion of cash, which includes his homes. Before any undisclosed personal borrowing.
14Stock Sales by Year
From his Form 4 filings: shares sold times the reported average prices, before tax and fees.
| Year | Shares sold | Proceeds |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 16,670,246 | $184.3M |
| 2021 | 36,306,307 | $865.7M |
| 2022 | 1,618,796 | $11.4M |
| 2023 | 2,629,186 | $39.7M |
| 2024 | 40,728,452 | $1,954.5M |
| 2025 | 1,645,333 | $223.7M |
| 2026 (to August 20) | 1,383,117 | $206.1M |
| Total | 100,981,437 | $3.49B |
2020 starts with the September 30 listing. 2024 includes the 36 million shares from options he exercised and sold from September to November.

16Sources and Method
This is a sum-of-the-parts estimate. Palantir shares come from Karp's latest Form 4, for August 20, 2026 (Class A and B, all held directly), and the 2026 proxy statement (Class F). All three classes are valued at the October 28, 2026 Class A close of $196.81, because Class B and F convert into Class A and have the same economic rights. Vested options are our count from the vesting schedule in the proxy, 21 of 40 quarterly installments of 3,525,000 less the 36 million he exercised in 2024; the count matches the proxy's figures for December 31, 2025 and April 2026. They are valued at intrinsic value, the share price less the $11.38 exercise price, after an assumed 39.4% tax; any remaining time value is ignored.
Cash is a scenario assumption, not a reconstructed balance. We split his stock sales by kind: option exercises taxed as ordinary income on the spread, sales that paid tax withholding on vesting stock (counted as kept at zero), trading-plan sales of vested shares, and earlier sales whose tax treatment cannot be rebuilt from the filings (we assume he kept half). Property is at reported purchase prices. Unvested awards, which depend on his staying at Palantir, are left out. The estimate is before any personal borrowing: loans secured by 3,000,000 pledged shares are disclosed but their amount is not, so nothing is deducted. We will update the page when he files new Forms 4 or the price moves materially.

1 Form 4 filed August 24, 2026 for transactions on August 20, 2026: after a quarterly vest of 975,000 Class B shares, sales to cover tax and a 90,000-share sale under his trading plan, he held 6,432,258 Class A and 52,492,901 Class B shares, all directly. No later Form 4 had been filed as of October 28, 2026.
2 Palantir proxy statement filed April 24, 2026, beneficial ownership as of April 6, 2026: 335,000 Class F shares held in the Founder Voting Trust, over which Karp has sole investment power; 3,000,000 of his Class A shares are pledged as collateral for personal debt arrangements; 11.4% of total votes excluding Class F.
3 Description of Palantir's securities, exhibit 4.2 to the 2024 annual report: the three classes have the same economic rights; each Class F share converts into one Class B share at any time, and automatically if the voting trust or founder voting agreement ends.
4 The 2020 option on 141,000,000 Class B shares at $11.38, expiring August 20, 2032, vests in 40 equal quarterly installments from August 20, 2021 (2026 proxy). After 21 installments through August 20, 2026 and the 36,000,000 exercised in 2024, about 38,025,000 are vested and 66,975,000 unvested; this is our calculation, which matches the proxy's 27,450,000 exercisable on December 31, 2025 and 34,500,000 exercisable within 60 days of April 6, 2026. 18,525,000 restricted stock units also remain unvested.
5 Bloomberg Billionaires Index profile, read October 28, 2026: $21.9 billion, No. 117; Palantir stake $11.7 billion; cash $3.15 billion, adjusted for taxes and including his homes; the profile says he holds about 27.5 million vested and exercisable options as of May 2026.
6 Our total of all 58 of Karp's Form 4 filings, September 2020 to August 2026: shares sold times reported weighted-average prices, before tax and fees. Trading plans are disclosed in Palantir's 10-K and 10-Q filings; the plan adopted March 12, 2026 covers up to 7,080,177 Class A shares through December 12, 2026.
