01Overview

James Talarico is worth about $582,000 if he owns his home outright, or about $283,000 with an illustrative mortgage, by our estimates from his Senate financial disclosures as of November 4, 2026. Both rest on the same pieces: a house in north Austin he bought in 2022 for more than $400,000 and between $67,000 and $305,000 in three Fidelity index funds, retirement accounts, a small pension and a checking account1. As a candidate he did not have to report a mortgage, so the actual balance is unknown; sitting senators must report one, so filings he makes in the Senate may clarify it.

The former sixth-grade teacher earned $7,200 a year in salary as a Texas state representative, plus a daily allowance during sessions, and supplemented it with an education consulting job that ended in October 2025. From January 3, 2027 he will earn a senator's salary, $174,000 since 2009, or up to 2.8% more if the automatic 2027 adjustment takes effect4. He beat Ken Paxton on November 3, 2026 in a race where his campaign raised more than $140 million and outside groups spent hundreds of millions more, none of it his money5.

02Reconcile the Estimate

Talarico's finances are simple to lay out. His August 2026 Senate candidate report lists nine holdings of three plain Fidelity index funds, a small state pension and one checking account, all in value ranges, and no reportable debts1. We value each holding at the midpoint of its range and add the Austin house he bought in 2022 at its reported price2. The one big unknown is a mortgage: candidates do not have to report a personal home or a loan on it, though sitting senators must report the mortgage.

Scenarios: The Mortgage Question

The house is most of what he owns, so whether he owes money on it matters more than anything else on the page.

High: top of every range, no mortgage$298K$408K (reported assessed value)$705K

The typical mortgage is our illustration, not a reported loan: 20% down on $400,000 and a 30-year fixed rate of 5.5%, close to Freddie Mac's weekly averages in June 20227, which after about 53 monthly payments of about $1,817 leaves roughly $299K owed.

His U.S. Senate candidate financial disclosure filed August 13, 2026 (Washington Free Beacon copy of the filed report)1; the home price as reported by the Washington Free Beacon and the purchase date by the Texas Tribune2. Figures may not add exactly because of rounding. Whose wealth this is: his alone. He is not married, and the reports list no spouse or dependent assets.

Not observable: Whether he has a mortgage and how large it is; the home's value today (an assessed value of $407,500 has been reported, tax year not stated); where in each disclosed range each holding really sits; and the size of the book advance.

As of November 2026, Forbes and OpenSecrets publish no figure for him. The $150,000-$186,000 figure on several net worth websites appears to be roughly the midpoint of his disclosed financial assets and leaves out the house. The two disclosure totals are our sums of his reported ranges.

04Assets and Liabilities

His brokerage account, Roth IRA and self-employed 401(k) hold the same three Fidelity index funds: total U.S. stock market (FSKAX), total international (FTIHX) and U.S. bonds (FXNAX). Only the brokerage funds produce reportable income, $201 to $1,000 each. The rest is a small pension from the Employees Retirement System of Texas, which covers state legislators, and a Wells Fargo checking account he holds with his mother, his only bank account on the forms. No pension from his teaching years appears on either report, and he reports no individual stocks, crypto, private companies or investment property1.

08Where the Money Came From

A Texas legislator's salary is $7,200 a year, set in the state constitution, plus a daily allowance while the Legislature is in session ($221 in 2025)4. His Senate reports show $13,904.92 from the Texas House on the January 2026 report and $51,497.64 on the August report13; neither says which months it covers.

The bigger earner was consulting. From September 2019 to October 2025 he worked as an independent education consultant for Maya Consulting LLC of Austin, which later renamed itself VIDA Collaborative. The January report shows $83,333.40 from the firm and the August report $33,333.3613. Because the periods are not stated, we do not add any of these into a yearly total. Republicans attacked the arrangement because the firm held state education contracts; his campaign and the firm's chief executive said he had no role in them6.

09The House

In June 2022 Talarico bought a three-bedroom house built in 1972 in north Austin, inside House District 50, which he won that year, for more than $400,000, according to real estate records cited by the Washington Free Beacon2. An assessed value of $407,500 has also been reported. It is by far his largest asset.

It is also the biggest gap in what is known. Senate disclosure rules leave out a home that does not earn rent, and candidates do not have to report a mortgage on it, so his reports neither show the house nor rule out a loan. Members of the Senate must report a mortgage on a personal residence, so filings he makes as a senator may clarify it; the first regular annual report would ordinarily be due in May 2028, covering 202710. A buyer who put 20% down at June 2022 interest rates would still owe about $299,000, which is why our scenarios run from about $167,000 to $705,000.

10The Book Deal

In March 2026 Talarico signed with HarperCollins for an untitled book, on "advance and royalties based on customary and usual terms", according to his August report1. The form does not require the size of an advance, and he had received no book income by August 133. In September 2025 he formed Nine Banded, LLC, with an Austin accountant as its registered agent; his report lists it as inactive and without value8. Any advance he is paid would appear as income on a later Senate report.

11The Most Expensive Senate Race

The money around Talarico dwarfs the money he owns. His campaign committee raised more than $140 million from January 2025 to October 14, 2026, almost all of it from individual donors, against about $22 million for Paxton's5. Outside groups spent more than $200 million against him, much of it from super PACs funded by Elon Musk, and AdImpact counted more than half a billion dollars of advertising in the race. None of that is his: campaign money belongs to the committee and can only be spent on the campaign or given away.

He won on November 3, 2026, in a night that gave Democrats their first statewide wins in Texas since 1994 and the party's first Texas Senate seat since 1988, and Paxton conceded that night9.

12The Raise

On January 3, 2027 Talarico goes from a $7,200 state salary to a senator's pay, $174,000 a year since 2009 and about 24 times as much. Congress has blocked the automatic raise every year since then; as of November 2026 the freeze ran through December 11, 2026, and without one the 2027 adjustment would be up to 2.8%4. Senate rules cap most outside earned income, but advances and royalties from a book are not counted against the cap10, so the book deal is the one obvious way his finances could change quickly.

14Frequently Asked Questions

What is James Talarico's net worth?

By our estimates as of November 4, 2026, about $582,000 if he owns his home outright and about $283,000 with an illustrative mortgage. Both use a north Austin house bought in 2022 for more than $400,000 and $67,000 to $305,000 in index funds and accounts on his August 2026 Senate disclosure. His actual mortgage balance, if any, is unknown.

Is James Talarico a millionaire?

The available disclosures and our home-value scenarios put him below $1 million; even the top of every disclosed range with no mortgage comes to about $705,000. His exact net worth is unknown, and the size of his book advance has not been disclosed.

How much does James Talarico make?

As a Texas state representative (to January 2027) he has earned a $7,200 salary plus a daily allowance during sessions. His August 2026 Senate report showed $84,831 of earned income, including consulting work that ended in October 2025. As a senator he will earn $174,000 a year, the rate since 2009, unless the 2027 pay adjustment of up to 2.8% takes effect.

What does James Talarico invest in?

Three Fidelity index funds: total U.S. stock market, total international stocks and U.S. bonds, held in a brokerage account, a Roth IRA and a self-employed 401(k). He reports no individual stocks.

Does James Talarico have debt?

His Senate candidate reports show no reportable debts. Candidates do not have to report a mortgage on their home, so whether he has one is not known. As a senator he must report one, so his Senate filings may clarify it.

15Sources and Method

This is a sum-of-the-parts estimate from public records. Each holding on his August 13, 2026 Senate candidate report is valued at the midpoint of its disclosed range; the joint checking account with his mother is counted at half. That gives about $182,000 in financial assets. The Austin home is added at $400,000, the floor of its reported June 2022 purchase price, for a total of $582,000 if he owns the home outright.

Candidate reports do not cover a personal home or its mortgage, so the headline shows two midpoint estimates side by side: mortgage-free, and with an illustrative mortgage, a 30-year loan for 80% of the price at 5.5%, which would leave about $299,000 owed by November 2026. The scenario range runs from the bottom of every disclosed range with that mortgage ($167,000) to the top of every range with no mortgage and the home at its reported assessed value ($705,000). We do not count the unpaid book advance or campaign funds. Neither end of that range is a limit on his actual wealth. We will update the page when his Senate filings show more.

November 4, 2026Corrected when his Senate filings could show a mortgage: the first regular annual report would ordinarily be due in May 2028, not May 15, 2027.
