01Overview

J.B. Pritzker is worth about $4.2 billion, by Forbes' estimate of October 15, 20263. His exact wealth is not publicly disclosed; our own model, built from his tax returns, comes to about $4.3 billion under stated assumptions, with scenarios from $3.0 billion to $5.0 billion. His fortune originated in inherited Pritzker family wealth, from the family that built Hyatt and the Marmon Group, and includes later investment growth; most of it sits in trusts that file their own tax returns.

That is why the most-asked question about his money has an odd answer. On his 2025 return he and his wife reported $9.4 million of income and paid $2.2 million in federal tax1, while the trusts paid $50.4 million2. We use those trust tax bills to model the size of the holdings behind them. He has also contributed $407 million to his own three campaigns for governor, including a then-record $171.5 million in 2018, and he faces Darren Bailey again on November 3, 2026.

02Reconcile the Estimate

Pritzker has released a tax return every year since 2017, but the joint returns do not disclose the full income or assets of the separately taxed trusts that hold most of the fortune. His campaign releases only what those trusts paid in tax. That is enough for a rough model of their size: the trusts' Illinois tax, at the flat 6.45% trust rate, implies about $140 million of income a year on average from 2018 to 20252. If the holdings produce taxable income of 3.5% of their value a year, counting dividends, interest and realized gains, they are worth about $4.0B. Each value below is our model, a reproducible calculation under stated assumptions rather than a verified balance sheet; only the tax figures and property prices are on the record.

Scenarios: What the Yield Assumption Does

The trusts' income is known roughly; the value that produces it is not. A lower yield means a bigger fortune behind the same income.

ScenarioTrust holdings yieldPersonal dividend / interest yieldResult
Low5%3% / 5%$3.0B
Middle4%2% / 4%$3.8B
Base case3.5%2% / 4%$4.3B
High3%1.5% / 3%$5.0B

All four use the 2018-2025 average of the trusts' Illinois tax and add the homes at purchase prices. Using 2025 alone, about $136 million of trust income, would give a base case close to the average.

Personal income from the 2025 joint federal and Illinois returns of J.B. and M.K. Pritzker, released October 15, 20261; trust taxes as reported by his campaign with each year's returns2; property prices as reported at purchase. Whose wealth this is: the couple and the trusts that benefit him, as the campaign reports them. Some of those trusts may also benefit his children, and his campaign says he takes no distributions from the offshore trusts and directs them to charity.

Not observable: Illinois figures trust tax after deductions, adjustments and credits, and the reported amounts may be payments rather than final liabilities, so dividing by 6.45% only approximates the trusts' income; how much of the trusts belongs economically to him rather than other beneficiaries; the trusts' actual holdings and returns, which have never been released; how much of their income is realized gains, which come and go with markets; which trusts the reported taxes cover (2025 coverage calls the taxpayer his blind trust, so some holdings could overlap with the personal investments, which would mean we count them twice); whether they include the offshore trusts; and the value today of homes bought between 2006 and 2024.

Forbes has put him between $3.2 billion and $4.2 billion every year since 2016, even as he spent hundreds of millions on politics. Our estimate is close to Forbes' but built a different way, from tax documents rather than an assessment of the holdings, and Bloomberg does not rank him individually.

05Assets and Liabilities

Everything except the homes is modeled from tax figures, because the holdings themselves have never been disclosed with values. Illinois economic interest forms list several hundred entities he has a stake in, from public stocks to venture funds, but give no amounts.

The two biggest swing factors are the yield assumption, where each half point moves the trust holdings by about $500 million, and how much of the trusts' income was one-time gains. We do not count the family foundation or campaign funds.

09The Inheritance

Pritzker's money starts with his grandfather, A.N. Pritzker, and his uncle Jay, who built Hyatt and the industrial conglomerate Marmon Group into one of America's largest family fortunes. His father, Donald, ran Hyatt's growth but died in 1972 at 39, when J.B. was seven.

The fortune was held in trusts, and after Jay Pritzker died in 1999 the family decided to divide it. In 2001, eleven cousins signed an agreement to break up the empire over about ten years, a process interrupted by a lawsuit from two younger relatives that settled in 2005. The biggest step was the sale of Marmon: Berkshire Hathaway agreed in December 2007 to buy 60% for $4.5 billion and owned substantially all of it by the end of 2013, buying the shares from trusts for the benefit of Pritzker family members4. Hyatt went public in 2009. Pritzker's own share of the proceeds has never been disclosed.

The clearest public trace of his stake is in Hyatt's ownership filings. In late 2016 the "Jay Robert Pritzker Family Trusts" held 2,610,665 Hyatt Class B shares, about $133 million at the price the family was selling at, falling to 1,830,094 shares within weeks. By August 2017, the year he ran for governor, the trusts no longer appear in the family's Hyatt filings4. Hyatt's share price is therefore not a good guide to his wealth today.

10Pritzker Group

Pritzker began investing on his own in 1996, after a law degree and a few years in politics, and was joined by his brother Tony in 2002. Their firm, Pritzker Group, grew into a private equity, venture capital and asset management business; its buyout arm, Pritzker Private Capital, has also raised outside money. He stepped down as managing partner in 2017 to run for governor. In 2012 he founded 1871, a nonprofit technology incubator in Chicago's Merchandise Mart, which is a civic project rather than part of his fortune.

11What His Tax Returns Show

The 2025 return

Pritzker and his wife file jointly, and their 2025 federal return, released October 15, 2026, shows adjusted gross income of $9,443,126: about $3.6 million of dividends, $1.8 million of interest and $4.0 million of capital gains. After $1.9 million of itemized deductions, they owed $2,204,162 in federal tax, 23.3% of their income, and $422,260 in Illinois tax1. Some coverage reported larger amounts; those were the payments made during the year, and the couple overpaid by $2.85 million.

The trusts

The returns leave out the trusts that benefit him, which pay their own taxes. His campaign reports what they paid (2025 coverage describes the taxpayer as his blind trust): $50.4 million in federal and $8.8 million in Illinois tax for 2025, and an average of $46.2 million a year in federal tax from 2018 to 20252. Illinois taxes trusts at a flat 6.45%, so the trusts' Illinois bills point to roughly $70 million to $250 million of income a year, about $140 million on average. Neither the trust returns nor their holdings have ever been released, and in 2017 PolitiFact rated false his claim to have released more tax information than his rivals.

Year by year

His personal income has swung from $2.3 million in 2022 to $55 million of Illinois income in 2017, the year he left Pritzker Group. The table below sets out each released year.

12The Blind Trust and the Offshore Trusts

Days before taking office in January 2019, Pritzker put his personally held investments into a blind trust run by Northern Trust and promised to sell direct stakes in companies doing business with the state. Reporting in 2022 found the trust held state contractors, including Centene, bought in 2020, when the insurer was collecting billions in Illinois Medicaid payments.

The family trusts stay outside his control. The Chicago Tribune found in 2018 that he had interests in 11 trusts based in the Bahamas, two of them created specifically for his benefit. His campaign has said he takes no distributions from the offshore trusts and directs them to charity.

13Paying for Politics

Pritzker contributed $171.5 million to his own campaign to win in 2018, passing Meg Whitman's $144 million record for a self-funded campaign in October that year, then $145 million in 2022 and $90.5 million in the 2026 race through August5. He also gave $58 million to the failed 2020 amendment that would have allowed a graduated income tax, and about $10 million to a super PAC backing Juliana Stratton in the 2026 U.S. Senate primary. Those itemized contributions add up to $475 million, $407 million of it to his own three campaigns for governor.

The spending dwarfs his opponents'. By the end of September 2026 his campaign had $44.4 million on hand against about $482,000 for Bailey5. He has said he would not fully pay for a presidential campaign himself.

14The Houses

The Pritzkers live in a Gold Coast mansion on Astor Street that they bought in 2006 for $14.5 million, and the house next door, bought in 2007 for about $3.7 million. That second house became a scandal. In 2015 its toilets were removed and the property was declared uninhabitable, cutting its assessed value from about $6.3 million to about $1.1 million. Cook County's inspector general called it a "scheme to defraud" in 2018 and put the tax savings at $331,432.03, which the Pritzkers repaid. A federal investigation was reported in 2019; no charges were filed6.

In 2018 they bought an equestrian estate in Wellington, Florida, for $12.1 million, and in November 2024 two unfinished floors of the No. 9 Walton tower from Ken Griffin, his chief opponent on the 2020 tax amendment, for $19 million. Griffin had paid $34 million.

15Giving

The J.B. and M.K. Pritzker Family Foundation had $281.3 million of assets at the end of 2024 after receiving $171.4 million in contributions that year; it reported $57.8 million of charitable disbursements7. Their best-known gift was $100 million to Northwestern University's law school in 2015, then the largest ever to a law school, which now carries the Pritzker name. On their personal returns they reported $1.9 million of charitable gifts for 2025 and $3.3 million for 2024.

19Sources and Method

This is an income-based estimate. The holdings behind Pritzker's fortune are not disclosed with values, but their income is partly visible. For the trusts that benefit him we take the Illinois income tax his campaign reported for each year from 2018 to 2025 (2023 was not reported), divide by the 6.45% rate Illinois charges trusts to get their income, average it and value it at a 3.5% taxable yield, meaning dividends, interest and realized gains together as a share of the holdings' value. Federal figures point the same way: the average federal bill of $46.2 million a year would match income of roughly $120 million to $200 million, depending on the mix of gains and ordinary income. For his personal holdings we take the dividends and interest on the 2025 joint return and value them at 2% and 4%. Homes are at their purchase prices.

The scenarios show how much depends on the yield: at 5% the same income implies $3.0 billion, at 3% about $5.0 billion. Trust income includes realized gains, which can jump in a strong market year, which is why we average the seven years with reported figures from 2018 through 2025 (2023 was not reported) rather than use 2025 alone. Because the trusts' income cannot be checked, we headline Forbes' estimate and show our model alongside it. We do not deduct taxes that would be due if the holdings were sold, as is standard for net worth estimates.
