01Overview

J.D. Vance is worth an estimated $15 million, within a range of $12 million to $21 million. Like all federal disclosures, his reports combine his assets with those of his wife, Usha Vance, and their children, so this is a household figure. He built it from a bestselling memoir, a career in venture capital and a large position in broad-market index funds, not from inherited money, a real estate empire or a corporate career.

Our figure starts from about $18.24 million in gross assets, valued from the midpoints of his federal disclosure ranges, Forbes' July 2025 value for his Cincinnati home and our own estimate of his future book royalties. Against that sit about $3.38 million in debt at range midpoints: a Schwab credit line reported at $1-5 million3 and a mortgage reported at $250,000-$500,000. Taking every disclosure range at its floor or its ceiling would put him anywhere from about $4.8 million to $24.9 million; our $12-21 million range is narrower, because its low end keeps the midpoints and drops only the modeled royalties and one Narya receivable, and its high end puts the debts as well as the assets at the top of their ranges (see Reconcile the estimate). Forbes estimated his net worth at about $12 million in July 2025, up from $10 million in November 2024.

His annual disclosure covering 2025, released June 30, 2026, showed his three core index funds each in the $1-5 million range and $1-5 million in Hillbilly Elegy royalties for the year, according to reporting on the filing4. Carried interest in his venture funds is not counted, because the filings list it as "not readily ascertainable."

02Reconcile the Estimate

Every line we count, with the basis for its value. Almost everything comes from Vance's federal disclosures (OGE Form 278e), which give value ranges rather than exact amounts, so most rows are range midpoints. The forms combine his assets with those of his wife and children, so this is a household figure.

No market prices are used. Disclosed ranges are taken at their midpoints: the 2026 filing (covering 2025, released June 30, 2026, values as reported by IANS) where reporting gave the value, otherwise the 2025 filing (covering 2024). The Cincinnati home is Forbes' July 2025 estimate and future royalties are our own model. The low end of the range ($12M) drops the modeled royalties and the fee receivable; the high end ($21M) puts every disclosed asset (home and modeled royalties held at our values) and both debts at the top of their ranges.

Not observable: where each holding sits inside its range; the value of the carried interest; the value of the fee receivable at the end of 2025 (the 2026 filing still lists management fee rights and related receivables, but reporting did not give a value); any mortgage on the Cincinnati home (personal-residence mortgages are generally not reportable); and any spouse-only debts below the reporting thresholds.

Our figure draws on Vance's June 2026 disclosure, which came after the Forbes estimate; it moved his Dow Jones ETF up to the $1-5 million range and reported $1-5 million in 2025 book royalties. We also include an estimate of future royalties. Earlier estimates were lower: Forbes put him at $10 million in November 2024, and CBS News estimated $4.8 million to $11.3 million from his disclosures in August 2024.

04Assets and Liabilities

Vance's portfolio spans six asset classes, from public index funds to Bitcoin. Values are our estimates, built from the midpoints of his disclosed value ranges, Forbes' July 2025 value for his Cincinnati home (a personal residence is not reported on the form) and our own modeled estimate of his future book royalties, which is not a disclosed value.

Values represent ranges as reported in federal financial disclosure forms (OGE Form 278e), and actual values may vary significantly within those ranges. Assets of his spouse and dependent children are reported together with his and are included. Category totals are rounded, so they may not add exactly to the gross figure. Items marked "2026 filing" come from press reporting on the report released June 30, 2026; TLT, GLD, the fund stakes and the cash balances are as valued in the June 2025 filing, because reporting on the 2026 filing did not give those values. The 2026 promissory-note figure is as reported by IANS; some outlets still cite the earlier $1-5M range. Any advance or royalties from "Communion" would first appear in the disclosure covering 2026. The $8M book sequel advance reported by Variety in 2024 (citing unnamed sources from a 2017 WME deal) was denied by a Vance spokesperson and is not included in this analysis.

08The Vice Presidential Fortune

An Intellectual Property Millionaire

J.D. Vance represents a new archetype in American politics: the intellectual property millionaire. Unlike traditional political wealth built on inherited money, real estate empires or corporate careers, Vance built his fortune through a combination of literary success, venture capital and a large position in broad-market index funds.

His wealth profile is distinctly modern - Bitcoin, venture fund carried interest and a seven-figure ETF portfolio alongside traditional real estate and cash. Three numbers capture how it came together: more than 750,000 copies of Hillbilly Elegy sold from July 15 to 31, 2024 (HarperCollins); about $45 million, the reported price of Netflix's 2019 film deal (Vance's share undisclosed); and $93 million raised by Narya Capital by January 2020.

"I think that what people in my community and communities like mine really want is a fair shake. They want to believe that hard work pays off." - J.D. Vance, "Hillbilly Elegy" (2016)

09The Six Pillars of Vance's Fortune

Each wealth source tells a story of strategic positioning and calculated risk-taking, from the memoir that launched his career to the venture capital stakes that still tie him to the startup world.

1. Hillbilly Elegy Royalties

The memoir that launched everything, with at least $1.8 million in disclosed royalties since 2020, counting the floor of the range reported for 2025. Published in June 2016 by HarperCollins, "Hillbilly Elegy" hit No. 1 on the New York Times list in 2016 and again in 2017, and spent more than a year on the best-seller list. It was adapted into a 2020 Netflix film directed by Ron Howard and starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams; Netflix reportedly paid about $45 million for the project in 2019, but Vance's share has never been disclosed.

His VP nomination set off a sales surge: HarperCollins said more than 650,000 copies sold in the 10 days after July 15, 2024, and more than 750,000 by month's end. Royalties were about $823,000 in 2020-216, fell below $50,000 in 2023 and were $50,000-$100,000 in 20243. The 2024 surge was paid out in 2025, when royalties reached $1-5 million according to reporting on his June 2026 disclosure4. A second book, "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," was published by Harper on June 16, 2026; its advance and sales have not been disclosed.

2. Venture Capital

About $2.4 million at range midpoints in fund stakes, the Narya note and a Narya fee receivable, plus carried interest. Narya Capital was co-founded in late 2019 and raised $93 million by January 2020, backing tech companies outside Silicon Valley. Vance holds 56.4% of the first $7 million of Fund I's carried interest and 55.2% above that3, plus a Fund I stake reported at $500K-$1M in his 2025 filing. The same filing lists a receivable for a $525,000 management-fee set-off contribution, valued at $500K-$1M. He exited Narya's management in exchange for a promissory note from Narya Capital Management payable through December 31, 2028, while keeping his carried interest; reporting on his 2026 filing puts the note at $500K-$1M, down from $1-5M a year earlier, with $100K-$1M in interest. Portfolio company True Anomaly was valued at $2.2 billion after an April 2026 Series D, though his share of that through the carry cannot be determined from the filings.

Rise of the Rest: Vance holds 15 basis points of the 20% carried interest in Steve Case's seed fund, plus a limited partner stake reported at $100K-$250K in his 2025 filing.

3. Public Market Portfolio

Between $3.5 million and $16 million in ETFs on the disclosed ranges, concentrated in three core broad-market funds at Charles Schwab. According to reporting on his 2026 disclosure, the Invesco QQQ Trust (Nasdaq 100), SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) and SPDR Dow Jones ETF (DIA) were each valued at $1-5 million; DIA moved up from the $500K-$1M range a year earlier, and SPY was already in the $1-5 million range in his 2025 filing. He also holds SPY in a SEP IRA ($100K-$250K in the 2025 filing), the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT, $100K-$250K) and the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD, $250K-$500K), the last two as valued in the 2025 filing.

Broad index funds give him market exposure while avoiding individual-stock conflicts of interest. He previously held about $75,000 of Walmart stock, which he sold in October 2023.

4. Bitcoin

Vance is one of the earlier Bitcoin holders among senior politicians. He first reported Bitcoin worth $100K-$250K at Coinbase in his 2022 Senate disclosure. The holding has since moved up to the $250K-$500K range, where it sat in both his 2025 filing and his 2026 filing, which reported little or no income from it. Disclosure ranges are wide, so the move between brackets does not establish a precise percentage gain. Vance has positioned himself as a supporter of the crypto industry, and Bitcoin remains the most volatile piece of his portfolio.

5. Real Estate

About $2.8 million in estimated property value. Cincinnati: a mid-19th-century Gothic Revival home in East Walnut Hills on 2.29 acres overlooking the Ohio River, bought in June 2018 for just under $1.4 million and held through 1858 Taft Road LLC. Forbes valued it at about $1.9 million in July 20255; as a personal residence it does not appear on his disclosure. Washington, D.C.: a Capitol Hill townhouse bought in 2014 for $590,000 and still rented; his 2026 filing reports a value of $500K-$1M and $15,001-$50,000 in annual rent. We use the $750,000 midpoint; Forbes estimated about $780,000 in July 2025.

Alexandria, Va. (sold): bought in February 2023 for $1,639,000, listed in February 2025 at $1,695,000 and sold in March 2025 for $1,867,025 - $172,025 over asking and a $228,025 gross gain before renovation and selling costs. Other: commercial land in Jackson, Ky. (about 100 acres, bought in 2017 for $70,600) and a residential property in Middletown, Ohio, each reported at $50K-$100K.

6. Cash and Banking

Between $566,000 and $1.3 million across several accounts, as valued in his 2025 filing. The four main accounts are Huntington National Bank ($250K-$500K, held through JD Vance Enterprises LLC), Marcus by Goldman Sachs savings ($100K-$250K), Schwab cash ($100K-$250K) and a Fidelity IRA money market fund ($100K-$250K, reported as his wife's). He also has a small USAA checking account ($1K-$15K) and a Fifth Third savings account inside a 529 college plan ($15K-$50K). Navy Federal Credit Union appears only as his mortgage lender, not as a deposit account.

10The Usha Vance Factor

A critical but often overlooked component of the Vance financial profile is the career of Usha Chilukuri Vance. A Yale Law graduate (class of 2013, where she met J.D.), Usha clerked for Judge Amul Thapar, then for appellate judge Brett Kavanaugh, and finally for Chief Justice John Roberts at the Supreme Court. She served as a litigator at the firm Munger, Tolles & Olson until July 2024, when she left following J.D.'s selection as VP nominee.

Her years of high-level legal work gave the family a second professional income during J.D.'s transition from author to venture capitalist to politician, although federal disclosures do not report a spouse's salary amount. She left the firm to focus on her role as Second Lady. The couple married on June 14, 2014 and have four children: Ewan, Vivek, Mirabel and Alec Neel, who was born on July 19, 2026, making Vance the first sitting Vice President to welcome a child in office since Schuyler Colfax in 1870.

"We don't study as kids, and we don't make our kids study when we're adults. Our kids don't study because we don't push them, because we're either too consumed with our own problems or because we don't know what to look for." - J.D. Vance, "Hillbilly Elegy" (2016)

11The Hidden Upside: Venture Capital Multiplier Effect

Vance's estimated net worth may understate his long-term wealth. His carried interest in Narya Capital and Rise of the Rest represents "asymmetric upside" - value that only shows up on a balance sheet once portfolio companies are sold or go public. The filings list the carry as "not readily ascertainable," which is why it is not counted in our estimate. The Narya Fund I carry is split in two tiers: 56.4% of the first $7 million, and 55.2% of anything above that.

Scenario Analysis

Narya raised $93 million for Fund I. If that fund produces returns typical of a successful early-stage VC fund, Vance's share of the carried interest could be worth millions on its own. Portfolio company True Anomaly, a space defense company doing Golden Dome interceptor prototype work, reached a $2.2 billion valuation on paper after its $650 million Series D in April 2026, but how much of that flows to Vance through the Fund I carry cannot be determined from his filings, and paper gains are not realized until an exit.

Narya's record so far is mixed: it sold part of its Rumble stake in 2023 at a profit of nearly $25 million, while AppHarvest, where Narya led a 2020 round, listed in 2021 and filed for Chapter 11 in July 2023. AmplifyBio, a cell- and gene-therapy contract research and manufacturing firm Narya backed, shut down in April 2025.

"I don't think there's anything about being a hillbilly that's bad per se, but the way that culture interacts with an economy that's not producing jobs for people without a lot of education - that's the problem." - J.D. Vance, interview with The American Conservative (2016)

12The Trajectory of Modern Political Wealth

J.D. Vance represents a new archetype in American political wealth: the intellectual property entrepreneur. By leveraging a single successful memoir into a career spanning venture capital and ultimately the Vice Presidency, he has built a portfolio that balances liquid index funds with venture upside.

His estimated $12-21 million net worth reflects not just accumulated assets, but positioning across several of the most dynamic parts of the 21st-century economy. From Bitcoin to venture capital carried interest, from real estate to book royalties, Vance's wealth profile mirrors the broader transformation of how fortunes are built in modern America.

Through his term as Vice President, the main drivers of his net worth are likely to be the performance of the broad U.S. stock market (via his QQQ, SPY and DIA holdings), the success of Narya's portfolio companies, and the continued sales of his books. His path from chronicling "Hillbilly" struggles to becoming a venture-backed millionaire and the nation's 50th Vice President marks one of the most rapid accumulations of capital and influence in modern American political history.

13The Path to Roughly $15 Million

Vance's wealth accumulation accelerated after the success of Hillbilly Elegy, enabling his move from law to venture capital and eventually to the Vice Presidency. The 2024 and 2025 figures follow Forbes' estimates of $10 million (November 2024) and $12 million (July 2025); the 2026 figure is our estimate based on his June 2026 disclosure. The 2014-2022 figures are our rough reconstruction, not published estimates.

14Political Wealth Rankings

Among major political figures, Vance falls into the middle tier - far richer than the typical American household and wealthier than most members of Congress, but well below the richest politicians in Washington. The ranges below run from Business Insider's disclosure-floor estimate to Quiver Quantitative's estimate, both published in March 2025; Vance's figure is our own estimate.

PoliticianQuiver Quantitative estimateRange
Rick Scott$550.7M$296M-$551M
Nancy Pelosi$285M$51M-$285M
Mark Warner$245.4M$131M-$245M
J.D. Vance (DaveManuel.com estimate)~$15M$12-21M

The median U.S. family net worth was $215,900 in the Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances (released October 9, 2026). Vance's wealth puts him in the top few percent of American households. Figures for other politicians are March 2025 estimates; former senator Mitt Romney (who left the Senate in January 2025) and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are not shown because no recent reputable estimate was found.

15Complete Disclosure Inventory

This inventory combines two federal disclosures: the annual OGE Form 278e covering 2025, received by OGE on June 29, 2026 and released June 30, 2026 (figures from that report are according to press reporting on the filing), and the annual report covering 2024, posted in June 2025, for line items the 2026 reporting did not cover. 17Frequently Asked Questions

What is J.D. Vance's net worth?

J.D. Vance's net worth is estimated at about $15 million as of November 2026, within a range of $12 million to $21 million. It is a household figure, because his federal disclosures combine his assets with those of his wife and children. Forbes estimated about $12 million in July 2025.

How did J.D. Vance make his money?

Mostly from his memoir Hillbilly Elegy, a career in venture capital at Mithril Capital, Rise of the Rest and his own firm Narya Capital, and a large position in broad-market index funds. His three core ETFs, QQQ, SPY and DIA, were each valued at $1 million to $5 million in his June 2026 disclosure.

How much does J.D. Vance make from Hillbilly Elegy?

Royalties were about $823,000 in 2020-21, fell below $50,000 in 2023 and were $50,000 to $100,000 in 2024. The sales surge after his July 2024 VP nomination was paid out in 2025, when royalties reached $1 million to $5 million according to reporting on his 2026 disclosure.

Does J.D. Vance own Bitcoin?

Yes. He reported Bitcoin at Coinbase worth $100,000 to $250,000 in 2022, and the holding was in the $250,000 to $500,000 range in both his 2025 and 2026 filings.

What is J.D. Vance's carried interest in Narya Capital worth?

It cannot be valued from his filings, which list it as not readily ascertainable, so it is not counted in our estimate. He holds 56.4% of the first $7 million of Narya Fund I's carried interest and 55.2% above that.

18Sources and Method

This estimate uses a sum-of-the-parts method: each asset is valued from the midpoint of its disclosed range, except the Cincinnati home (Forbes' July 2025 estimate, since a personal residence is not reported on the form) and future book royalties (our own model), for gross assets of about $18.24 million. The Schwab credit line and the mortgage, about $3.38 million together at their range midpoints, are subtracted, leaving about $14.86 million, shown as $15 million. Carried interest is not included. Like all OGE reports, his combine the assets of the filer, his spouse and dependent children, so this is a household figure.

The $12-21 million range comes from the same line items. The low end ($12.2 million) drops the modeled royalties and the Narya fee receivable, which is still listed in the 2026 filing, but without a value in the reporting. The high end ($20.7 million) puts every disclosed asset and both debts at the top of their ranges. Taking every disclosure range at its floor with debts at their ceilings, or at its ceiling with debts at their floors, would give a much wider spread of about $4.8 million to $24.9 million.
