Mark Carney
01Overview
Our illustrative model puts Mark Carney's net worth at about $13M in U.S. dollars as of November 7, 2026. It is not a disclosed figure: most of it is our estimate of an investment portfolio held in a blind trust whose value has not been made public. The model combines a placeholder value for his Ottawa house, the Brookfield stock options he likely kept and an estimate of what more than three decades of well-paid work in banking, central banking and private equity let him save. Our scenarios run from approximately $6M to $24M, and his actual wealth could fall outside that range.
Not included: carried interest in the first Brookfield Global Transition Fund, which Brookfield has confirmed he is entitled to13 but whose value cannot be estimated from public records. The $6.8 million in Brookfield options that made headlines in 2025 probably overstates what he kept, since on Brookfield's standard vesting schedule most of them had not vested when he left5. His July 2025 ethics filing listed 567 stocks and funds in a managed account, private shares in the payments company Stripe, and options and deferred share units of both Brookfield companies, all put into a blind trust, and he has said he also owns a house and a cottage1. As prime minister he earns C$435,400 a year7.
| Full name | Mark Joseph Carney |
| Born | March 16, 1965, Fort Smith, Northwest Territories |
| Age | 61 |
| Role (as of November 2026) | Prime Minister of Canada and MP for Nepean |
| Source of wealth | Investment banking, central bank pay, Brookfield private equity pay and equity |
02Reconcile the Estimate
Carney's net worth cannot be established from the public disclosures we reviewed. His public ethics filing lists what he owns but gives no values1. His holdings went into a blind trust in March 2025, and he has said that outside it he owns only cash, a cottage and the family home3. So this page sets out what the records reveal and how we built an estimate from them: a placeholder value for his Ottawa house, the Brookfield options he likely kept, and a model of his savings based on what he is known to have been paid.
| Counted | Basis | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Investment assets and cash (modeled)Modeled | A proxy for his total financial wealth, built from his pay (see the model table below), excluding the Brookfield Asset Management options valued separately. It does not value his Stripe shares, Brookfield Corporation awards or other holdings one by one1 | $11.6M |
| Ottawa home, assumed half shareEstimated | Rockcliffe Park house bought in August 2003 for C$1.3 million3, given a placeholder value of C$2.2 million, near the area's July 2026 average house sale of C$2,225,0004. We assume he owns half (title split not public) and deduct no mortgage; both are assumptions, and the value is not an appraisal | $0.8M |
| Brookfield Asset Management options he likely keptModeled | Modeled pretax intrinsic value of about 41,860 of the 209,300 options granted in 2023, assuming the standard vesting schedule applied without change and the options remain outstanding and exercisable, at $35.13 each, valued at the October 26, 2026 price of $47.045 | $499K |
| Estimated net worth (model) | $13M | |
How the $13M Estimate Is Built
| Investment assets and cash (modeled)Modeled | $11.6M | 90% | |
| Ottawa home, assumed half shareEstimated | $0.8M | 6% | |
| Brookfield Asset Management options he likely keptModeled | $499K | 4% |
Solid: holdings counted from a filing value, a market price or a public record. Hatched: values we modeled or estimated, including values taken from disclosed ranges.
| Left out | Why | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated unvested options | The other 367,440 Brookfield Asset Management options in his name at the end of 2024, which on the standard schedule would not have vested by January 16, 2025, when he left5. At the October 26, 2026 price their pretax intrinsic value would be about $3.4M. Excluded from the model. | Excluded |
| Cottage | Outside the blind trust; its location has not been disclosed3. Counted only in the high scenario, at C$1 million. | Unknown |
| Mortgage on the home | A C$600,000 Royal Bank of Canada mortgage registered in 2003 is still on title; the balance owed is unknown3. The registration shows neither the current balance nor that the house is debt-free. The middle case deducts nothing, which is an assumption. The low scenario assumes the original mortgage remains fully outstanding and deducts half of that balance as his assumed share. | Unknown |
| Carried interest in Brookfield Global Transition Fund I | Brookfield has confirmed he is entitled to carried interest, a share of the profits, from the first transition fund, a US$15 billion fund he helped set up, which is expected to mature around 2032, with a possible two-year extension13. Its value depends on the fund's returns and cannot be estimated from public records, so it is not factored into the estimate. | Not counted |
| Pensions | About nine years at the Bank of Canada and the Department of Finance, and his MP and prime minister pensions. The Bank of England paid him cash instead of a pension7. | Not counted |
| His wife's assets | Diana Fox Carney's own assets are not covered by his disclosure. | Not counted |
Scenarios: How Much Did He Save?
The portfolio is most of the estimate, and it rests on three guesses: what he had saved by 2013, how much of his later pay he kept, and how fast the money grew.
| Scenario | Investment assets and cash | Home and cottage | Brookfield options | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low: saved less, 4% a year growth, mortgage still owed | $4.8M | Half of $1.4M, less half of the $0.4M mortgage | $499K | $5.8M |
| Middle (headline): 6% a year growth, half the house | $11.6M | Half of $1.6M | $499K | $12.9M |
| Middle, owning the whole house | $11.6M | $1.6M | $499K | $13.7M |
| High: saved more, 8% a year growth, whole house plus cottage | $20.8M | $1.9M plus a $0.7M cottage | $499K | $23.8M |
Middle case: US$2 million saved by mid-2013 from 13 years at Goldman Sachs and nine in Canadian public service; half of his after-tax Bank of England pay saved (about $1.6M); Brookfield cash pay of US$2.5 million a year, an equal share of the 2024 pay reported for three executives together2 applied to every year, with 70% of it kept after tax (about $3.5M); all of it growing at 6% a year after investment taxes and fees. Low case: US$1 million by 2013, 30% and 50% saved, US$1.5 million a year at Brookfield, 4% growth. High case: US$3 million, 70% and 80% saved, US$3.5 million a year, 8% growth. These are our assumptions, not reported figures. Before rounding, the results are $5.80M (low), $12.88M (middle) and $23.82M (high). Each column is rounded separately, so the parts may not add exactly to the result, which comes from the unrounded calculation.
His summary statement under the Conflict of Interest Act, published by the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner on July 11, 20251; Brookfield Asset Management's annual report for 20242; property records as reported by CBC News3; his pay as reported at each job. Whose wealth this is: his own, as an individual. His wife's assets are not counted. How title to the house is split between them is not public, so the middle and low cases assume he owns half; if he owns all of it, the middle case would be about $13.7M. The high scenario counts the house and cottage in full. Currency: U.S. dollars, converting Canadian figures at C$1.40 per US$9.
Not observable: Almost everything inside the blind trust: how big the managed account is, what his shares in Stripe, Watershed, Cultivo and North of 60 Advisors are worth, how many Brookfield Corporation options and deferred share units he kept, and what his RRSP holds. Also the cottage, the mortgage balance and any money from the Brookfield transition fund. The trustee can tell him, but no one is required to tell the public.
03Public Disclosures and Other Estimates
| Source | Date | Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| DaveManuel.com estimate | November 7, 2026 | About $13M, illustrative model (scenarios approximately $6M-$24M) |

| Net worth websites | 2025-2026 | Roughly US$5 million to US$15 million, without a stated method |
Forbes and Bloomberg publish no figure for him. The Walrus, reviewing his finances in February 2026, called his net worth "anyone's guess"10. Some websites treat the US$6.8 million in Brookfield options as if it were his whole fortune; on the standard vesting schedule, most of those options had not vested when he left.
04Assets and Liabilities
His ethics filing lists what went into the blind trust, without values1. The amounts below are ours.

| MortgageC$600,000 Royal Bank of Canada mortgage registered in 2003; balance unknown | Unknown |
| Model estimate; no mortgage deducted (an assumption, not evidence of no debt) | $13M |
The portfolio is a single modeled figure, not the sum of valued holdings. The home is a placeholder at a typical price for its neighbourhood, not an appraisal, and the mortgage registration shows neither the current balance nor that the house is debt-free.

08What He Owns
On July 11, 2025, the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner published the list of what Carney put into his blind trust1. Most of it is one investment account, run by an outside manager who picked the stocks: 567 entries, from Nvidia and Tesla to Philip Morris and Lockheed Martin. By our count only about four are Canadian companies, and about nine in ten are American (our breakdown of that list). These shares describe the number of listed holdings, not how the money is split: without values, four Canadian holdings could be a small or a large part of the account.
The rest of the list is more personal: a self-administered RRSP, private shares in Stripe (whose board he sat on), the carbon-accounting company Watershed (which he advised), Cultivo Land and North of 60 Advisors, units of Partners Value Investments, options and deferred share units of both Brookfield Corporation and Brookfield Asset Management, and a notional share in the Brookfield Global Transition Fund1. Not one item has a value attached. The list shows what he owned in July 2025; trades inside the blind trust since then are not public.
09The $6.8 Million in Options, and What He Kept
Brookfield Asset Management's annual report for 2024 showed Carney holding 409,300 options at the end of that year: 209,300 granted in February 2023 at $35.13 a share and 200,000 granted in February 2024 at $40.07, together worth $6,813,892 at the year-end price of $54.192. That is the $6.8 million figure reported in March 202511.
He probably did not keep most of it. The annual report says options vest over up to five years, normally 20% a year beginning the year after the grant2, and when Brookfield's chief operating officer was asked about Carney's departure at a Commons committee in November 2025, he said Carney "left on standard terms" and "took everything that was vested"5. Assuming the standard schedule applied without change, about 41,860 options from the 2023 grant would have vested by January 16, 2025, and none of the 2024 grant. His ethics filing in July 2025 still listed Brookfield Asset Management options among his holdings1; whether any have been exercised since, inside the blind trust, is not public. If they are still held and exercisable, their pretax intrinsic value (the share price less the exercise price) was about $499K at $47.04 a share on October 26, 2026. Whether leaving Brookfield shortened the exercise window is not public.
10Where the Money Came From
Carney's pay is on the record for some of his career and not for the rest. The Bank of England paid him GBP 480,000 a year plus a 30% cash allowance instead of a pension, GBP 624,000 in all, and a housing allowance of GBP 250,0007. His Goldman Sachs pay was never published. At Brookfield, his pay was reported only in a total with two other executives: US$4 million in salaries and US$3.5 million in cash bonuses for the three of them in 20242.
We use those figures to model what he could have saved. In our middle case he had US$2 million by 2013, kept half of his after-tax Bank of England pay (about $1.6M), kept 70% of his after-tax Brookfield pay at US$2.5 million a year (about $3.5M), and earned 6% a year after investment taxes and fees on all of it. That comes to about $11.6M today; the step-by-step table below shows the arithmetic. It is the largest and least certain part of the estimate.
11The Houses
The Carneys bought a house in Rockcliffe Park, the neighbourhood often called Ottawa's most prestigious address, in August 2003 for C$1.3 million, the year he became deputy governor of the Bank of Canada3. They planned to rent it out when he moved to London, and the family moved back to Ottawa in 2020. As prime minister he lives at Rideau Cottage, the official residence on the Rideau Hall grounds. Rockcliffe Park houses sold for an average of C$2,225,000 in mid-20264, so we use a placeholder of C$2.2 million for the house and count half of it as his, since how title is split with his wife is not public.
A C$600,000 mortgage from the Royal Bank of Canada was registered against the house in 2003 and was still on title in 2025; how much, if anything, is owed is not public3. There is also a cottage, which he mentioned in March 2025 and whose location the Prime Minister's Office has not given3.
12Carried Interest: The Profit Share That Could Come Later
Carney has carried interest in the first fund he helped set up at Brookfield, and it is not factored into our estimate. His ethics filing lists it as a "notional long term incentive plan" in the Brookfield Global Transition Fund1, and at a Commons committee in November 2025 Brookfield's chief operating officer, Justin Beber, confirmed that Carney is entitled to carried interest from Brookfield Global Transition Fund I, the US$15 billion climate fund he helped raise, which is expected to mature around 2032, with a possible two-year extension13. He is not entitled to carried interest from the second transition fund or the Catalytic Transition Fund, which were still being set up when he left, Beber said.
Carried interest is a share of a fund's profits, usually paid once investors have their money back plus a minimum return, so what it is worth depends on how the fund's investments do over the next several years. A Conservative MP argued at the same hearing that it could be worth tens of millions of dollars; Beber said that was "certainly not a fact"5. No figure has been disclosed, and we have not tried to estimate one. The carried-interest entitlement may already have economic value, but we cannot reliably quantify it from public information. We exclude it from the model; its eventual payout could be substantial or negligible, and not counting it does not mean it is worth nothing.
13The Blind Trust and the Screen
A blind trust means a trustee manages the assets and Carney is not told what is bought or sold, though he knows what went in. Private holdings can be difficult to sell, and what has happened to them since is not established by the public documents we reviewed. To cover them, the Clerk of the Privy Council and his chief of staff run a conflict-of-interest screen that keeps him out of decisions about 103 companies, chiefly the two Brookfield companies, Stripe and the businesses they control8. Critics have asked him to sell instead; the ethics commissioner has said the law does not require him to12.
14The Portfolio Model, Step by Step
How the middle case reaches $11.6M for his investment assets and cash. Every input is our assumption unless a footnote says otherwise; the three pieces are added together.
| Piece | Inputs | Amount saved | Invested from | Value on November 7, 2026 at 6% a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Savings before the Bank of England | Investments he held on taking the job, beyond his Ottawa house. Not disclosed; assumed | US$2.0M | July 1, 2013 | $4.4M |
| Bank of England pay | GBP 624,000 a year7 for about 6.7 years (July 1, 2013 to March 15, 2020), approximately GBP 4.2 million in all under our constant-pay assumption; about 56% kept after U.K. income tax and National Insurance; US$1.33 per GBP; half saved | $1.6M | November 2016 (midpoint) | $2.8M |
| Brookfield pay | US$2.5 million a year, an equal one-third share of the pay Brookfield reported for three executives in 20242, applied to all of about 4.3 years (October 1, 2020 to January 16, 2025), approximately US$10.7M in all; about 47% kept after Ontario top tax rates; 70% saved | $3.5M | November 2022 (midpoint) | $4.4M |
| Investment assets and cash | Sum of the three pieces | $7.1M | $11.6M |
Amounts are rounded separately, so they may not add exactly; the model uses exact dates and unrounded figures. Growth is compounded yearly, including part-years, and is meant to be after investment taxes and fees. Each period's savings are treated as invested at its midpoint. The opening amount excludes home equity; mortgage payments, living costs and taxes are assumed to come out of the pay that was not saved. The Brookfield figure is an equal-share assumption, not his reported pay: his own salary and bonus were not disclosed for any year. The low and high scenarios change these same inputs.
15His Brookfield Asset Management Options
As reported in Brookfield Asset Management's annual report for 20242, with our estimate of what he kept.
| Grant | Options | Exercise price | Original expiry | Value at Dec. 31, 2024 | Likely kept (our estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| February 2023 | 209,300 | $35.13 | February 15, 2033 | $3,989,572 | 41,860 |
| February 2024 | 200,000 | $40.07 | February 15, 2034 | $2,824,320 | 0 |
| Total | 409,300 | $6,813,892 | 41,860 |
Values are the year-end price of $54.19 less the exercise price, as the report calculates them. He received no deferred share units from Brookfield Asset Management.
16What His Jobs Paid

17Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mark Carney's net worth?
About $13M in U.S. dollars as of November 7, 2026, in our illustrative model. Our illustrative scenarios produce approximately $6M to $24M, and his actual wealth could fall outside that range. Most of the figure is a modeled investment portfolio in a blind trust whose value has not been disclosed.
Does Mark Carney still have $6.8 million in Brookfield options?
Probably not. That was the value of 409,300 options at the end of 2024. Brookfield says he took what had vested when he left in January 2025. Assuming the standard vesting schedule applied without change, that is about 41,860 options, with a pretax intrinsic value of about $499K at the October 26, 2026 price if they remain outstanding and exercisable.
What is in Mark Carney's blind trust?
His July 2025 filing listed a managed account of 567 stocks and funds, a self-administered RRSP, private shares in Stripe, Watershed, Cultivo Land and North of 60 Advisors, units of Partners Value Investments, Brookfield options and deferred share units, and a notional share in a Brookfield fund. No values have been published, and trades inside the trust since then are not public.
How much does Mark Carney make as prime minister?
C$435,400 a year from April 1, 2026, twice an MP's base salary of C$217,700, plus a car allowance.
Does Mark Carney have carried interest at Brookfield?
Yes. Brookfield confirmed in November 2025 that he is entitled to carried interest from Brookfield Global Transition Fund I, the first transition fund he helped set up, which is expected to mature around 2032, with a possible two-year extension, but not from the later transition funds. Its value depends on the fund's performance and has not been disclosed, so it is not factored into our estimate.
Is Mark Carney a billionaire?
There is no substantiated public evidence in the sources we reviewed that he is. Our high scenario, which assumes he saved heavily and his investments grew 8% a year, comes to about $23.8M, though a model cannot prove an upper limit.
18Sources and Method
This is a sum-of-the-parts estimate. His public ethics filing lists his assets but not their values1, so we value what records allow and model the rest. The Ottawa house has a placeholder value of C$2.2 million, near the July 2026 average sale price in Rockcliffe Park4, of which we count an assumed half share, with no mortgage deducted. The Brookfield Asset Management options are the 41,860 we estimate had vested when he left, assuming the standard schedule applied and they have not been exercised, valued at the October 26, 2026 price of $47.04 less the $35.13 exercise price5.
The investment portfolio is modeled from his pay: savings from before 2013, part of his after-tax Bank of England pay and part of his after-tax Brookfield pay, grown at a steady rate (see the scenarios). The scenarios run from $5.8M (less saved, 4% growth, the 2003 mortgage still owed) to $23.8M (more saved, 8% growth, the whole house and a C$1 million cottage). The model does not count savings from his pay since leaving Brookfield, including as prime minister, or from the Bank of England housing allowance, which we treat as spent on housing. Canadian dollars are converted at C$1.40 per US$9. This earnings-and-savings model may miss substantial gains or losses from private investments and equity compensation, whose values cannot be established from the disclosures we reviewed; that is one reason his actual wealth could fall outside the scenarios. We do not count pensions, his wife's assets or his carried interest in Brookfield Global Transition Fund I, which Brookfield has confirmed but whose value cannot be estimated. We will update the page if a value is disclosed.
