04What the Numbers Mean

Employer dollars per worker is not the match formula. The government filing shows how much the company put into the plan in total, not its match rate or vesting schedule. Dividing by active employees gives a real-world measure of generosity that covers matching, profit-sharing and automatic company contributions, but it can be pulled down when many eligible workers do not contribute enough to get the full match. Your plan's summary plan description has the formula.

Admin costs leave out fund fees. The filing reports administrative expenses paid out of plan assets, such as recordkeeping, audit and legal fees. Most of what savers pay comes from the expense ratios of the funds they hold, which are taken out of fund returns and do not appear here. A plan showing no admin costs usually has its employer or its funds covering them.

Latest filing, not the latest year. Each plan shows its most recent filing. Plans file up to nine and a half months after their plan year ends, so the newest figures are usually one to two years old. Figures are for the plan as a whole, not for any one employee.

Who is not here. Plans for government employees (such as the federal Thrift Savings Plan and state and local 457 plans) and most church plans do not file this form, and 403(b) plans without a 401(k) feature are not included. Plans that invest through master trusts are listed by plan; the master trusts themselves are left out.

05Questions People Ask

How do I find my company's 401(k) plan?

Search above by your employer's name. If nothing comes up, try the parent company's legal name or the city where it is based; plans are filed under the name of the sponsoring company, which is not always the brand name.

What is a good employer contribution?

Among plans with 1,000 to 9,999 participants, the typical employer put in about $1,974 per active worker on the latest filings. Each plan report shows where that plan ranks against plans of a similar size.

Can I see my own account?

No. These are plan-wide totals that every plan reports to the Department of Labor. Your own balance and contributions are on your plan provider's website and statements.

Why are some figures missing?

Some filings leave fields blank, and figures that would be misleading (for example, per-worker amounts for a plan winding down with almost no active employees) are not shown.

06Method and Sources

The lookup reads the Department of Labor's Form 5500 and Form 5500-SF bulk data, with Schedule H (large plans) and Schedule I (small plans on the full form), for the latest three form years. A plan is included when its filing lists the 401(k) feature (code 2J), and each plan, identified by its sponsor's employer number and plan number, shows its most recent filing. Size groups use participants at the start of the plan year. The data is rebuilt each month after Labor updates its files.
