Definition of Direct-to-PVOD
What does the term "direct-to-PVOD" mean? What is meant by the term "Direct-to-PVOD"?
Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, content producers like Disney are reimagining how their expensive content will be delivered to consumers.
In the past, the formula was pretty much the same and never changed. A movie would be released to theaters. After a couple of months, it would leave theaters and be released on DVD or Blu-Ray. After some more time, the offering would find itself on a streaming service like Netflix.
A few things have changed recently:
1) Disney has launched their own streaming platform called Disney Plus
2) The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way that people consume content, perhaps permanently.
There are few people that want to sit in a movie theater right now, which is why Disney is attempting their first direct-to-PVOD offering with the live-action remake of "Mulan".
Now, what does "direct-to-PVOD" mean?
To start, PVOD is "Premium Video on Demand". So, if you buy a movie on Apple TV, this is a PVOD offering.
Now, with direct-to-PVOD, you are skipping the movie theater altogether and going straight to an online purchase, which is what Disney is attempting with "Mulan".
