The term "mom and pop shop" refers to a small, independent business.

A "mom and pop shop" usually refers to a small store. For instance, a local convenience store that is run by a family and isn't a franchise would be referred to as a "mom and pop shop".

The opposite of a "mom and pop shop"? A franchise such as McDonald's, which has tens of thousands of locations across the world and does billions of dollars in revenues every year.

Many "mom and pop shops" have gone the way of the dodo bird over the last couple of decades, mainly due to the surge in popularity of megastores such as Wal-Mart.

Mom and pop shops usually have a handful of employees (many times they are family members) and low revenues.
