01Overview

Dario Amodei is worth an estimated $17.4 billion, almost all of it in his stake in Anthropic, the AI company he co-founded in 2021 and runs as chief executive. We estimate he owns about 1.8% of Anthropic, the midpoint of estimates of about 1.6% (Forbes) and about 2% (The Information, via Reuters), and value it at the $965 billion post-money valuation set in Anthropic's $65 billion Series H round on May 28, 2026. Bloomberg estimates his stake is lower, under 1%. Anthropic has never disclosed the founders' stakes, and the draft IPO prospectus reported by Reuters does not disclose them either, so the range is wide: $15.4 billion at 1.6% to $19.3 billion at 2%.

The number is about to be tested. Anthropic confidentially filed for an IPO on June 1, 2026, and investors have discussed a listing valuation of $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion. At $2 trillion, a 1.8% stake would be worth about $36 billion. His fortune has grown quickly: Forbes first counted him as a billionaire only in January 2025, at about $1.2 billion.

Two things make his number unusual. Amodei and the other co-founders have pledged to give away 80% of their Anthropic equity, a commitment Anthropic says dates to the company's founding, so most of this fortune is promised to charity even though every tracker still counts it. And the trackers disagree by a wide margin: Forbes had him at $15.5 billion on October 18, 2026, while the Bloomberg Billionaires Index puts each co-founder at about $8 billion because it estimates their stakes at under 1%.

Bloomberg Billionaires IndexOctober 19, 2026About $8B

All three figures use the same company valuation, Anthropic's $965 billion Series H mark, and none appears to apply a discount for the shares being private. The gap is mainly about how much of Anthropic Amodei owns. Forbes estimates just over 1.6% (adjusted in May 2026 for possible dilution), which gives $15.5 billion. Bloomberg estimates each co-founder's stake at under 1%, using PitchBook data and Carta data on typical employee grants, which gives about $8 billion. The Information reported in August 2026 that Amodei owns about 2%, which would be $19.3 billion. We use the midpoint of the Forbes and Information estimates. When Anthropic's public prospectus is filed, its ownership table should settle the question.

03Asset Breakdown

Amodei's wealth is one private holding. His Anthropic shares make up essentially all of our estimate, so every $100 billion change in Anthropic's valuation moves his net worth by about $1.8 billion. No home purchase, outside investment or share sale by him has been reported.

Not subtracted: the 80% pledge. Amodei and the other co-founders have pledged to donate 80% of their Anthropic equity. Until shares are actually given away they remain his, and Forbes and Bloomberg also count the full stake. If the pledge were carried out in full at today's valuation, he would keep about $3.5 billion. Also not reflected: Anthropic's new Public Benefit Fund (announced October 18, 2026), which would receive 5% of the company's shares if stockholders approve it. If those shares are newly issued, they would dilute existing holders by roughly 5% (4.8% to 5%, depending on how the grant is measured), cutting our estimate by about $0.8-0.9 billion.

06Background

Early life and science

Dario Amodei was born in San Francisco in 1983 and grew up there. His father, Riccardo Amodei, was a leather craftsman from Massa Marittima in Tuscany; his mother, Elena Engel, was born in Chicago and managed library renovation and construction projects in Berkeley and San Francisco. His sister Daniela, about four years younger, would later co-found Anthropic with him.

He was on the US Physics Olympiad team in 2000, began his undergraduate studies at Caltech and finished a physics degree at Stanford. At Princeton he moved from theoretical physics into biology after his father died in 2006, earning a PhD in 2011 under William Bialek and Michael Berry with a thesis on recording and modelling the collective behaviour of neural circuits. He was a Hertz Fellow and won the foundation's thesis prize, then did a postdoc at Stanford School of Medicine using mass spectrometry to search for cancer biomarkers.

Into AI

In November 2014 Amodei joined Baidu's Silicon Valley AI Lab under Andrew Ng, where he worked on Deep Speech 2, a speech-recognition system for English and Mandarin. He then spent about ten months at Google Brain, where he co-wrote "Concrete Problems in AI Safety" (2016), an early, widely cited paper on making machine learning systems behave safely.

He joined OpenAI in 2016, became Vice President of Research and led the teams behind GPT-2 and GPT-3. He was the senior author on the January 2020 "Scaling Laws for Neural Language Models" paper, which showed that language models improve predictably with more data, compute and parameters, an idea that underpins the industry's push to build ever-larger models. OpenAI announced his departure on December 29, 2020.

07Building Anthropic

The founding

Amodei co-founded Anthropic in early 2021 with Daniela and other OpenAI researchers who left over differences with OpenAI's leadership about values and priorities. Forbes counts seven co-founders: the two Amodeis, Tom Brown, Jack Clark, Jared Kaplan, Sam McCandlish and Chris Olah. The company was set up as a Delaware public benefit corporation, which lets its board weigh a public mission alongside shareholder returns. The $124 million Series A in May 2021 was led by Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, with Dustin Moskovitz and Eric Schmidt among the investors; PitchBook puts the valuation at about $461 million.

In 2022 Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX led a $580 million Series B. After FTX collapsed, its bankruptcy estate sold most of the stake for $884 million in March 2024 and the rest later that year. Amazon and Google became its biggest strategic backers from 2023; court filings reported in 2025 showed Google owning 14% of the company.

From billions to nearly a trillion

Anthropic's valuation rose about 2,000-fold in five years. It was $61.5 billion after the March 2025 Series E, $183 billion after the September 2025 Series F, $380 billion after the February 2026 Series G and $965 billion after the May 28, 2026 Series H, a $65 billion round that for the first time valued Anthropic above OpenAI (then $852 billion).

Revenue drove the marks. Anthropic said it had about $1 billion of annualized revenue at the start of 2025 and more than $47 billion of run-rate revenue by May 2026; its Claude Code programming tool alone passed $2.5 billion of run-rate revenue by February 2026. In October 2026 the Financial Times and Reuters reported that Anthropic told investors its third-quarter revenue was $16.8 billion, with an adjusted profit.

Who controls the company

Founder control does not come from owning a lot of shares. Each co-founder's economic stake is small: under 1% by Bloomberg's estimate and about 1.6% to 2% by the Forbes and Information estimates. Control comes from structure instead. According to the draft prospectus, as reported by Reuters, a single Class F share will carry 50.1% of the vote on key matters after the IPO and will be directed by the co-founders through a Founder LLC; the plan needed shareholder approval and could still change. A founder would lose his place in the LLC on leaving the company or selling too many shares. Separately, Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust, an independent body of trustees, holds Class T stock and will elect four of the seven directors after the IPO. Amodei and his sister are among the directors elected by stockholders.

For a net worth estimate the point is simple: the voting share adds power, not money. We count only his economic stake.

08How We Value the Stake

The stake

Anthropic does not disclose how much each founder owns. Forbes reported in January 2025, from a cap table it reviewed, that each co-founder held more than 6% in 2023, diluted to 2-3% by early 2025. Forbes then used just over 1.8% (February 2026) and just over 1.6% (May 2026). Bloomberg uses under 1%. The Information, in a report carried by Reuters on August 18, 2026, said Amodei owns about 2%. We use 1.8%, the midpoint of the Forbes and Information figures, and show the full range.

The price

We value the stake at Anthropic's last primary funding round, the $965 billion post-money valuation of May 28, 2026, because it is the most recent price the company itself has confirmed. Secondary-market trades have implied higher values, about $1.2 trillion on Caplight in July and about $1.5 trillion by late September, according to Business Insider, but those are thin trades in a private stock. We apply no discount for illiquidity, as Forbes does, because a listing appears close.

What the IPO could do

Anthropic announced on June 1, 2026 that it had confidentially submitted a draft registration statement to the SEC. Bloomberg reported in September that it chose Nasdaq, and IFR reported in October that the public filing was planned for late October, with marketing to start the week of November 9. Prospective investors have discussed $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion. At $2 trillion, a 1.8% stake would be worth about $36 billion, more than double our estimate. Once Anthropic trades, this page will value his shares at market, as we do for Larry Ellison's Oracle stake.

09Pay and Cash

Amodei's pay is small next to his stake. Reuters, which saw the draft prospectus before it was public, reported on October 6, 2026 that his 2025 total pay was about $18 million, mostly stock and option awards, and that his base salary was later doubled to $1.4 million. Daniela Amodei's 2025 total was $16.4 million. Both received restricted stock units in 2026, some vesting with continued employment and some tied to the IPO. Reuters put his pay above Alphabet's Sundar Pichai ($10.9 million) and Amazon's Andy Jassy ($2.1 million) but below the chief executives of Oracle and Nvidia.

No sale of Anthropic shares by Amodei has been reported. Anthropic ran an employee tender offer of up to $6 billion at a $350 billion valuation in early 2026, but whether any founders sold in it was not reported. Forbes describes the co-founders' wealth as tied up entirely in the private company.

10The 80% Pledge

In his January 2026 essay "The Adolescence of Technology", Amodei wrote: "All of Anthropic's co-founders have pledged to donate 80% of our wealth." In the same section he wrote that "wealthy individuals have an obligation to help solve this problem" of AI-driven wealth concentration. Anthropic said on October 18, 2026 that the co-founders made the pledge at the company's founding, and the draft prospectus describes it, according to Reuters, as a commitment to dedicate 80% of their personal Anthropic equity to charitable causes.

The pledge has not been carried out, and no vehicle or timetable for his own giving has been reported. Forbes gives him its lowest philanthropy score, which measures money already given rather than promised. If he does give away 80% at today's valuation, he would keep roughly $3.5 billion, which would still make him a billionaire.

At the company level, Anthropic announced on October 18, 2026 that it would commit 5% of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval, with an additional 2% that the board can add for every 50% rise in the company's value above a set baseline. Counting the founders' pledge and matched employee pledges, Anthropic says roughly 20% of its shares are now committed to the public good.

11Risks to the Number

The Pentagon dispute

In late February 2026 Amodei refused Defense Department demands to drop Anthropic's contract bans on using Claude for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. The administration ordered a federal phase-out of Claude and the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply chain risk in early March. US District Judge Rita Lin temporarily blocked the designation and the phase-out order on March 26, 2026, and on August 27 ruled that the Pentagon had acted illegally to punish the company. On September 25 the DC Circuit ruled 2-1 for the Pentagon in a separate challenge, allowing it to keep Claude out of Defense Department work. By October the relationship appeared to be thawing: President Trump told TIME he had a long private dinner with Amodei and called him "a very smart guy".

A private, concentrated fortune

Every dollar of this estimate rides on one private company whose value has been set by funding rounds rather than a market. A weak IPO, a lower listing price or more dilution, from new share issuance, employee grants or the Public Benefit Fund, would all cut his number. The reverse is also true: a listing at the valuations investors are discussing would roughly double it.

17Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dario Amodei's net worth?

We estimate $17.4 billion as of October 20, 2026, based on an estimated 1.8% stake in Anthropic at its $965 billion Series H valuation. Forbes had him at $15.5 billion on October 18, 2026, and the Bloomberg Billionaires Index at about $8 billion on October 19, 2026. The difference comes from how much of Anthropic each tracker thinks he owns.

How much of Anthropic does Dario Amodei own?

Anthropic has not disclosed it. Published estimates run from under 1% (Bloomberg) to just over 1.6% (Forbes, May 2026) to about 2% (The Information, August 2026). Forbes reported that each co-founder held more than 6% in 2023, before later funding rounds diluted them.

Is Dario Amodei a billionaire?

Yes. Forbes first estimated him at more than $1 billion in January 2025, Bloomberg first counted the co-founders as billionaires in March 2025, and all seven entered its ranking of the world's 500 richest people in May 2026. He joined the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans in September 2026.

How much does Dario Amodei make a year?

His 2025 total pay was about $18 million, mostly stock and options, and his base salary was doubled to $1.4 million, according to Reuters' report on Anthropic's draft IPO prospectus. Nearly all of his wealth is his Anthropic stake, not his pay.

Is Dario Amodei giving away his money?

He has pledged to. Amodei and the other Anthropic co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their Anthropic equity, a commitment Anthropic says dates to the company's founding in 2021 and which Amodei stated publicly in January 2026. It has not yet been carried out, so trackers still count his full stake.

18Sources and Method

Amodei's fortune is a single private holding, so the estimate is one multiplication: an estimated 1.8% stake times Anthropic's $965 billion post-money valuation from the May 28, 2026 Series H round, which gives $17.37 billion. The 1.8% is the midpoint of Forbes' just-over-1.6% (May 2026) and The Information's about-2% (August 2026). The range of $15.4 billion to $19.3 billion uses the two ends. We use the last company-confirmed round rather than secondary-market trades or IPO talk, and apply no private-company discount; Forbes' figures equal stake times round price, and Bloomberg's appear to as well.

We count the single Class F founder share at zero, because it carries votes but no extra economic value. We do not subtract the 80% charitable pledge, because the shares have not been given away, and we do not yet reflect the Public Benefit Fund, which needs stockholder approval. Salary and cash are not estimated: no figures for his after-tax savings are public, and they are small next to the stake. No personal debt has been reported. When Anthropic's public prospectus discloses founder ownership, or the stock starts trading, we will replace the estimate with the disclosed share count at market prices.

1 Anthropic has not disclosed founder ownership. Our 1.8% is the midpoint of Forbes' just over 1.6% (May 29, 2026) and The Information's about 2% (August 18, 2026). Bloomberg estimates under 1%.

2 Pledge made by all the co-founders at Anthropic's founding, per Anthropic (October 18, 2026), and stated publicly in Amodei's January 2026 essay. Not yet carried out; the full stake is counted in our estimate.

Last updated: October 20, 2026. Net worth figures are estimates built from public filings and reporting; private holdings are valued conservatively and may differ from what the person would report.
