Gwynne Shotwell
01Overview
Gwynne Shotwell is worth an estimated $1.9 billion, almost all of it in SpaceX stock. She owns 12,697,645 SpaceX shares, according to the ownership statement she filed with the SEC when the company went public in June 2026, worth $1.88 billion at the October 20, 2026 close of $147.79. We add about $48 million in pre-tax cash from her September 2026 option exercise and sale, for a total of $1.92 billion.
Shotwell did not found SpaceX. She joined SpaceX in 2002 as one of its first dozen employees, has run its day-to-day business as president since 2008, and received $85.8 million in total pay in 2025. Forbes first counted her as a billionaire in April 2025, at $1.2 billion, and had her at $1.9 billion on October 20, 2026.
Two things could move the number. She also holds options on about 4.4 million more shares, mostly unvested, worth about $480 million on paper at the latest close; we leave them out until they vest. And in July 2026 she and her husband pledged one SpaceX share to each of more than 2 million children through the new Trump Accounts, a gift worth about $296 million at the latest close and roughly a sixth of her shares. No transfer has been reported yet, so we still count those shares as hers.

| DaveManuel.com | October 20, 2026 | $1.92B (range $1.6-2.4B) |
| Forbes Real-Time | October 20, 2026 | $1.9B (No. 2,174 in the world) |
| Bloomberg Law | May 21, 2026 | Stake of roughly $2B at a $2 trillion SpaceX valuation |
Our figure is close to Forbes', which puts her stake at about 0.11% of SpaceX at market prices and appears to give little or no value to her options or cash. Earlier in 2026 the estimates were far apart. Before SpaceX's IPO filing showed her actual holdings, Forbes put her stake at about 0.27% of the company and valued her at $3.4 billion on its March 2026 billionaires list; the filing showed about 0.1%, and Forbes cut its estimate. Bloomberg Law reported in May 2026 that her stake would be worth roughly $2 billion at a $2 trillion valuation; we found no current Bloomberg Billionaires Index figure for her.
03Asset Breakdown
Shotwell's wealth is one public stock. Her SpaceX shares make up about 97.5% of our total, so every $10 move in SpaceX's share price changes her net worth by about $127 million.

At $147.79 that is about $296 million, or about 16% of her shares. No gift had been reported in her SEC filings as of October 20, 2026, so the shares are still counted. If the gift goes ahead, our estimate falls to about $1.6 billion. Taxes on the September sale and on any future option exercises are not estimated.

06Background
Early life
Gwynne Shotwell was born Gwynne Rowley in Evanston, Illinois, in 1963 and grew up in Libertyville, a suburb north of Chicago, the middle of three daughters. Her father was a brain surgeon who taught at Northwestern's medical school; her mother was an artist. She has said that a Society of Women Engineers event her mother took her to as a teenager, where she met a woman mechanical engineer who ran her own company, settled her career: "As of that afternoon, I knew I would be a mechanical engineer."
Education and first jobs
She earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Northwestern in 1986, one of three women in a class of 36, and joined Chrysler's management training program. She went back to Northwestern for a master's in applied mathematics in 1988, then spent about ten years at The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California, doing thermal analysis and systems engineering and rising to chief engineer of a satellite program. In 1998 she moved to Microcosm, a small launch company, to run its space systems division.
07Building SpaceX
Joining
In 2002 a former colleague who had moved to SpaceX invited her to lunch, and she met Elon Musk briefly. She told him the company needed a good business developer; SpaceX called that afternoon. She joined as vice president of business development, one of its first dozen employees (often reported as No. 7), and is credited with selling about ten launch contracts before SpaceX had flown a rocket.
The NASA contracts
Her deals kept the company alive. NASA gave SpaceX a $278 million award in 2006 to develop Dragon and Falcon 9, and on December 23, 2008, months after SpaceX's first successful orbital launch, a $1.6 billion contract for 12 cargo flights to the International Space Station. She was made president in December 2008. In 2014 SpaceX won $2.6 billion to fly astronauts, and in May 2020 it became the first private company to launch people to orbit.
Running the company
As president and chief operating officer, Shotwell runs SpaceX's customers, contracts and daily operations while Musk sets direction and engineering. Under her the company landed and reused rockets, became the world's dominant launch provider and built Starlink into a mass-market internet business. SpaceX merged with Musk's xAI in February 2026, in a deal Bloomberg said valued SpaceX at $1 trillion, and she led the company's opening bell at Nasdaq in New York when it went public on June 12, 2026.
08The IPO and Her Stake
The listing
SpaceX priced its IPO at $135 a share on June 11, 2026, selling 555.6 million Class A shares for $75 billion before the underwriters' extra shares, the largest IPO on record. The stock opened at $150 and closed its first day at $160.95, valuing the company at about $2.1 trillion. It reached $225.64 on June 16, fell below the IPO price in late July and hit a post-IPO low of $104.83 in August, about 22% below $135, before recovering. It closed at $147.79 on October 20, 2026, a market value of about $2.0 trillion.
What she owns
Her Form 3, filed the day the IPO priced, lists 12,697,645 shares: 7,113,550 Class B shares, which have extra votes and convert one-for-one into Class A, and 5,584,095 Class A shares, including 3,112,060 held by two family trusts. That is about 0.1% of SpaceX. She also holds options on another 4.4 million shares, most granted in 2024 and 2025 at $19.40 to $42.40 a share, which vest over the next five years.
09Pay, Sales and the Trump Accounts Gift
Pay
Reuters, citing SpaceX's IPO filing, reported in April 2026 that Shotwell's total pay for 2025 was $85.8 million on a $1 million salary, most of it in stock options. The New York Times reported that this made her SpaceX's highest-paid executive, far ahead of finance chief Bret Johnsen at $9.8 million, and more than three times what the chief executives of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman were paid. She also earns about $300,000 a year as a Polaris director, much of it paid in stock units.
The September sale
On September 22, 2026, under a trading plan she adopted on June 23, Shotwell exercised options on 342,170 shares and sold them the same day for an average of $153.57, or $52.5 million. Because she sold only newly exercised option shares, her holding of 12.7 million shares did not change.
The pledge
On July 6, 2026, two days after the Trump Accounts program launched, Shotwell and her husband announced that they would give one SpaceX share to the account of each of more than 2 million children aged 11 to 17 in lower-income areas, "with a bit more emphasis for those that live near our central Texas home". President Trump valued the gift at $325 million; at the October 20 close it is worth about $296 million. Under Treasury rules that took effect on September 30, such gifts must pass through a charity, such as a private foundation, and recipients generally must hold the shares for about five years. In October Musk said he would give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America starting in 2027, about $10.7 billion of stock but a little over 1% of his holding; Shotwell's gift is about a sixth of hers.
10How We Value Her Fortune
SpaceX is now public, so the main input is a market price rather than an estimate. We multiply her 12,697,645 shares by the October 20, 2026 close of $147.79, which gives $1.877 billion, and add the roughly $48 million she received before tax from her September sale. That gives $1.92 billion.
We leave out her 4.4 million unvested and unexercised options until they vest and are exercised; at today's price they would add about $480 million before tax, which is the top of our range. We do not subtract the pledged gift of 2 million shares until it is made; taking it out gives the bottom of our range, about $1.6 billion. Her Texas ranch, Polaris stock units and past savings have no public values and are not added.
11Risks to the Number
Almost everything rides on one stock that has been volatile since listing: at its June high her shares were worth about $2.9 billion, and at its lowest point after the IPO about $1.3 billion. More SpaceX shares will be freed for sale as lock-up periods for pre-IPO holders expire through the end of 2026, and on October 20 SpaceX and Tesla disclosed that their boards had formed special committees of independent directors to review a possible merger. Shotwell sits on the SpaceX board but is not an independent director. After the regular close on October 20, SpaceX reported third-quarter results and its shares rose about 8% in after-hours trading; this page uses regular closing prices and will reflect that move if it holds.

19Sources and Method
This is a market-value estimate. SpaceX trades on Nasdaq, so we multiply the 12,697,645 shares in Shotwell's SEC ownership filings by the October 20, 2026 close of $147.79, which gives $1.877 billion. Her Form 3 of June 11, 2026 lists the holding; her Form 4 of September 24, 2026 shows that her September sale used newly exercised option shares, leaving the holding unchanged. We add $48.0 million of pre-tax cash from that sale: $52.5 million of proceeds less a $4.5 million exercise cost. Taxes are not estimated.
Unvested and unexercised options are not counted; the top of our range adds their value at the latest close. The pledged gift of 2 million shares is not subtracted until her filings show it has been made; the bottom of our range takes it out. Her ranch, Polaris stock units and other savings have no public values and are not included. No personal debt or pledged shares are disclosed.
