Travel Advisory Tracker
The U.S. State Department's travel advisory for every country, on one map, with every recorded change in level back to January 2018. Updated every hour from the State Department's own feed.
01The Map
Every country and area the State Department has an advisory for, colored by its level today. Hover over or tap a country for its level and the date of its latest advisory; click it to see its full history below. Small islands and territories that are too small to see on the map are in the table in section 03.

One level per country can hide higher-risk regions inside it. Many advisories set their own, higher levels for particular states, provinces or border areas, Mexico's among them. Check the full advisory for where you are actually going.
Some places share one shape on the map: France's overseas departments are drawn as part of France, and Gaza and the West Bank as one area colored by the higher of their two levels. The United States has no advisory for itself. Map outlines: Natural Earth via the world-atlas package.
02The Latest Changes
Every recorded change: advisories raised, lowered or added since January 2018, newest first. For the latest change in each country, the risks its current advisory names are shown underneath. Most advisories are reissued without any change in level; only changes in level are listed here. In the last 30 days, 1 advisory was raised and 1 lowered.

04How the Map Has Changed Since 2018
The number of countries and areas at each level at the end of every month since January 2018, reconstructed from the archived copies of the feed (where a change can only be dated to a window, it is counted from the end of that window). The Do Not Travel count peaked at 138 in March 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the State Department folded the CDC's health warnings into each country's level. In January 2018 it stood at 11; today it is 24.
For four and a half months in 2020 the State Department also had a single Global Level 4 Health Advisory telling Americans to avoid all international travel, from March 19 to August 6, 2020. It sat on top of the country advisories and is not counted here. Counts come from the advisories in force on the last day of each month.
The biggest single days
- April 20, 2021: 33 advisories raised in one day.
Only changes dated to the day are counted here.

06What the Levels Mean
| Level | What the State Department says | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions | The lowest level. Some risk comes with any international travel, and conditions can differ from home. | 84 |
| Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution | Heightened risks to safety and security. The advisory says what they are and where. | 82 |
| Level 3: Reconsider Travel | Serious risks. Avoid travel there unless the trip is essential. | 27 |
| Level 4: Do Not Travel | The greatest likelihood of life-threatening risks. The U.S. government may have very limited ability to help, and Americans already there are often told to leave. | 24 |
The risks the advisories name most often
Each advisory opens by saying why it is set where it is: “due to crime, terrorism and kidnapping,” for example. Counting those opening sentences across all 217 advisories:
| Risk named | Advisories |
|---|---|
| Crime | 92 |
| Terrorism | 70 |
| Civil unrest | 62 |
| Health risks or limited medical care | 47 |
| Kidnapping or hostage taking | 34 |
| Landmines or unexploded ordnance | 23 |
| Armed conflict | 17 |
| Wrongful or arbitrary detention, exit bans | 10 |
| Natural disasters or severe weather | 10 |
| Arbitrary enforcement of local laws | 6 |
DaveManuel.com's own count of the words in each advisory's opening sentence, not a State Department classification. Many Level 1 advisories name no particular risk.
07How This Tracker Works
Every hour this page reads the State Department's public travel advisory feed, the same one behind travel.state.gov, and records each advisory's level and date. When a level changes, the change goes into the log in section 02 the same hour.
The history before the tracker went live comes from 427 archived copies of the State Department's advisory RSS feed saved by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine between January 2018 and the tracker's launch, one copy per day where there were several. Each copy is compared with the one before it. A change is dated to the day the State Department issued the advisory at its new level. Where the archived copies are far apart (often weeks or months before 2026), the date shown is the date of the first advisory seen at the new level, marked “by”, and a country that went up and back down again between two copies will not show. The four-level system began in January 2018, so there is no history before that.
Some advisories have been combined or split over the years. Before Gaza and the West Bank had advisories of their own, they were covered by the Israel advisory; their histories here start when they were first listed separately. The same goes for Hong Kong and Macau, once part of the China advisory, and for the Dutch Caribbean islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.
08Frequently Asked Questions
What are the four U.S. travel advisory levels?
Level 1 is Exercise Normal Precautions, the lowest. Level 2 is Exercise Increased Caution. Level 3 is Reconsider Travel. Level 4 is Do Not Travel, the highest, used where the risks to life are greatest and the U.S. government may be able to do very little to help. The State Department has used these four levels since January 2018, when they replaced the old travel warnings and travel alerts.
Which countries are on the Do Not Travel list?
As of November 6, 2026, 24 countries and areas are at Level 4: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burma, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gaza, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Niger, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Uganda, Ukraine, Yemen. The map and table on this page update every hour from the State Department's own feed.
How often does the State Department update travel advisories?
Whenever conditions change, and on a fixed schedule otherwise: advisories at Levels 1 and 2 are reviewed at least once every 12 months, and those at Levels 3 and 4 at least every six months. A review can end with the same level reissued, which is why many advisories show a recent date without a change in level.
Can I still travel to a Level 4 country?
A travel advisory is advice, not a ban. U.S. citizens are generally free to go, but the State Department says the U.S. government may be unable to help them there, and some Level 4 places have no U.S. embassy at all. Some insurers exclude Level 4 destinations from travel insurance, so check the policy before you go. One exception: U.S. passports are not valid for travel to North Korea without a special validation from the State Department.
Does one level cover the whole country?
No. The level is for the country as a whole, but many advisories also name regions with their own, often higher, levels. Mexico is the best known example: its overall level sits well below the Do Not Travel warnings for several of its states. Read the full advisory for the places you plan to visit.
Where does this data come from?
Every advisory, level and date comes from the U.S. State Department's public travel advisory feed, read every hour. The history before this page went live comes from copies of the same feed saved by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine since January 2018. DaveManuel.com compares each copy with the one before to find when levels changed. Changes that fell between two archived copies and were reversed before the next one cannot be seen, so the log is every change on record rather than a guaranteed complete list.
