How To Successfully Stay Up All Night (aka "Pulling An All-Nighter")

how to pull an all nighter - stay up all night I speak on this issue as a certified expert on the matter. I have stayed up all-night more times than I can count in my life.

There are easy ways to stay up all-night and then there are the harder ways. If you find yourself in a situation where you are forced to stay up all night (studying for exams, other pressing matters) then I would recommend using at least one of these tips as they will help you make it through the night.

dave is drinking his redbull... oh shiiii1. Drink Red Bulls - if you want to easily stay up all night, buy a bunch of Red Bulls and just keep chugging whenever you start to feel drowsy. The upside to Red Bulls is that you will not only feel awake, but you will also feel fairly alert (from my experience) - the downside is that one Red Bull has 80 mg of caffeine, which is about twice as much caffeine as what is found in a can of Coke. Not terrible, but if you have six or seven Red Bulls over the course of one night, you are going to be ingesting an awful lot of caffeine. The benefits of drinking a Red Bull over just popping caffeine pills is that Red Bull contains some ingredients that will help you body perform and feel better, such as Tuarine and Vitamin B6. I believe that caffeine pills have around 200 mg of caffeine on average, so it is very easy to overdo it and that can be harmful to your body. Red Bulls don't taste particularly great to me, but they get the job done. In limited amounts, they really do work.

2. Stay out of the bedroom. The worst thing that you can do when you are trying to stay up all night is to hang around in your bedroom. Your body associates your bed with sleeping, so when you start getting drowsy, your body will practically shut down if you are anywhere close to your bed. Close the bedroom door and study somewhere else if you need to stay up all night; the further that you get away from your bed, the better. If there is an all-night Internet cafe or Starbucks close-by that you can study at, that is even better.

3. Avoid the "danger hours" of 5 am to 8 am by completely leaving your house or apartment. This is the time that most people will fade away and pass out when they are attempting an all-nighter. Most attempted "all-nighters" will fail during these times. If you really need to stay out all night, you must try to avoid being anywhere close to your bed during these times. Go to a Starbucks and work there, or go for a long drive with the windows open. If your eyes catch sight of your bed during this time period (and you aren't hopped up on Red Bulls), you will almost definitely pass out.

4. Fuel the body. I find that when I pull an all-nighter, I start to lose my appetite and start to feel slightly nauseous. It's important that you fuel your body with good foods even if you aren't really hungry. Avoid making a trip through the 24 hour McDonald's; stock up early on chicken, fresh fruits and juices - foods that won't weigh you down and make you feel drowsy. The worst thing that you can do when you are trying to stay up all-night is to consume a huge meal loaded with heavy foods. If you don't eat any food during your all-nighter, this will just make it twice as hard for your body to cope and keep you up.
5. Make sure that you have plenty of external stimulus. I like to listen to upbeat music when I am trying to stay up all night. Other people like to have the television blasting in the background. If you are sitting in a quiet room trying to study, I think that you have a much better chance of feeling asleep. Put on some decent, upbeat music and you will have an easier time staying up.

6. If you are feeling drowsy, go for a short walk in the night air. Don't overdo the walk; you will tire yourself out. A 20 minute stroll around the block (especially if it is cold out) will wipe away most of the drowsiness in your body. If you are feeling drowsy, go and take the dog for a walk. If you don't feel safe walking at that time of night, go for a drive with the windows open. You will feel much more alert when you get back.

If you find yourself getting terribly drowsy and don't think that you will make it all night, then I would recommend the next best thing - a short nap, aka the "Power Nap." The idea is to end your sleep before you enter a "deep sleep", aka the "Slow-Wave-Sleep."

If you take a nap and wake up before you enter your "deep sleep", you will often feel surprisingly refreshed and alert. The mistake that most people make is that they nap for too long and enter the "deep sleep" phase, and they will wake up from this feeling groggy and drowsy and mentally unfocused.

I would recommend a power-nap of around 30 minutes. If you don't let the idea of staying up all night, then a power-nap is the next best thing. You will still feel tired throughout the day if you have just a power-nap instead of a regular sleep, but you will likely function a bit better.

It's always recommended to get a good night's sleep if you can, but if you have to stay up, these tips listed above will likely help you quite a bit.

I would recommend drinking coffee and Monster Energy Drinks. And for music to listen to, i would highly recommend listening to Girl Talk!

I tend to pull all-nighters at least once a week and its worked perfectly for me.

You are missing have heaps of sugars, as glucose is food for the brain. Stick to these and have sugars. Haven't slept for years now.

It's called adderall and should cost $3 max... I hit on the girl I get it from so she gives me deals... I learned 12 chapters of college chemistry in 48 hours on 8 adderall and nothing but NOS and Rockstar Punched... Most caffeine for price...

all i wanted was to stay up all night plus iam 12 i cant go out at night can 1? and the whole piont of having allnighters is that you dont fall asleep wtf is the power nap for ..its kinda cheating.

that info helps, but the best ive found, is adderall! like the person above me said, $3 a pill at the most, it keeps you up and motivated! But if your against adderall, go with the next best thing, its called "Endorush" its by the brand BSN, its by far the strongest energy drink ive ever had, rockstars and red bulls never did anything to me, red lines did work at first... but after a few weeks it slowly looses its effect. You can only get Endorush online or at Vitamin Shoppe! i suggest the lemon lime, add a little sprite to it, and its amazing!

I am currently pulling an all nighter to finish a paper and the tips will be helpful, i just want to add drinking lots of tea because in addition to having caffeine the flavor of many teas keeps you alert.

Two cans of Mega Monster will keep you up at night, then when it the morning comes and it's time to actually go do something, grab a 5 Hour Energy.

You'll be good for the day.

Just make sure you can sleep like 12 hours the next night though, because you WILL be tired.

Hello there! I'm a 14 year old girl and it's 2:13am here. I have been studying for my exam since 12...and I think something that helps is a big cup of coffee... or eat an energy food like an apple. That works for me... oh and stay away from comfy places. Study in a chair, not the couch!

Not a bad guide. I like the "Power Nap" terminology too. I started using it after me and my friends stayed up all night and power-napped from 4:40-5:00. It worked perfectly and we functioned throughout the day like normal human beings. It's 3:16AM now, which means one hour and twenty four minutes until my power nap. Thanks for the help. Peace.

vitamin B and potassium, eat a light snack about every hour or so, more vitamin B...caffeine and energy drinks are just crap that will make you crash so when you get to the test youve been up all night for you'll lose effin focus

Just take a drive to your closest ghetto and drive around in there and see if you can buy and 8 ball or a couple rocks of crack. you'll stay up for at least 2 days on that stuff and you'll be fine. good luck!!!!

I am a psych major on memory and brain function. firstly sugar is good for short term bursts of energy and brain function , but long term you will just crash. secondly, redbull is very dangerous if you have more than 3 or 4 and ti contains sugar as well. I prefer multivitamins and plain black coffee. thirdly, taking a power nap at 5-8 is highly not recommended as you may sleep through your alarm when going into such a deep sleep, which is highly probable. and lastly, i do very much agree wiht what is said about good foods. green veggies, proteins (fish is best) and good carbs: brown rice, oatmeal, corn, also potatos which are rich in vitamin d to keep you positive are all good things since your brain needs these carbs. p.s. green veggies are a good source of carbs. taking regular - 10 - 15 min breaks to listen to up beat music is deffinately a must as well, something motivating. oh yeah, glucose is fine if you must, something like cane sugar, but stay away from processed sugars .

Leave for USMC (2nd Term) in 2 days staying up till then to stay with gf and family as much as I can..Best One so far for me is punching myself in the face every few momments hurt like shit might cause brain damage but worth it lol..Also cold showers keep my ass wide awake..

The comedown of energy drinks is why whenever I pull an all nighter I stay away from it. Plenty of water to keep hydrated, fruit if you can, stay healthy. Eventually any buzz off any caffeine will fade and you're left feeling more tired than you were before and even more dehydrated. Plenty of experience of doing all nighters, no doubt a student, all those anxious all nighters worrying over exams!

It's 3:56, I have 4 Finals tomorrow, and this is really helping!! I think I'm going to pick up a five hour energy in the morning! :D may I suggest, taking small breaks from studying. Get up, walk around the room a few times. It gives your brain a small rest, and you become more focused when you sit back down!b :)

class at 8am tomorrow. last till like 6:30pm. lol. breaks in between. im glad its the beginning of the semester. if i get to like 1 am, and im not asleep, i cant, cause ill stay asleep thrugh every alarm imaginable, and ill miss my classes. ugh. i need a sleep switch on my head. but for now, im just skippin out on the 6 hours of sleep minimum i would have gotten, and prob g get like 5 red bulls in the mornin. :P

This is a great guide. But 6 or so cans of any energy drink is too much. I drink Monster and I usually stick to 2-3 cans in a single day in college and 1 or less cans a day at home.

Hey, great tips! Pulling an all nighter right now for school and World of Warcraft. I'll definately use some of these. (although I wouldn't personally recommend driving in the condition I'm in right now, might be kind of dangerous, especially in the dark.)

There is no way in hell that I'm going to try the Red Bull tip. I cannot handle that much caffeine without feeling sick to my stomach. I'm also not a regular caffeine drinker so I get really bad withdrawal symptoms.

The other tips are great though. I usually just do 15-20 minute power naps though. I've never really done an all nighter before but I'm going to try tonight since I've got a paper due tomorrow morning ahhh..

I would recommend staying away from candy and drinks in high sugar because, yes you will feel a short burst of energy, but the sugars do that. They give you energy then make you crash..... QUICK!!!!!!!!

Ok, good tips, but people who think adderall is a great 'tool' for staying awake, think about this--when doctors prescribe adderall, they evaluate potential risks in their patients. Some are required to undergo extensive EKGs, because of potential heart failure side effect. Popping them just to study for a test, when you don't need them to FUNCTION NORMALLY AS A HUMAN BEING is just stupid. Horribly horribly stupid. And combining them with caffeinated drinks is doubling your chance of over straining your heart and having a heart attack. So yeah, great idea, clearly you belong in college. Want to stay awake? Do the yoga sun salutation. The different positions encourage blood flow and wake you up quickly. Skip the adderall, save your heart--sincerely, a girl with a BS in Neuropsychology, specializing in ADHD research and medicine studies

eat a pizza or sumtin fillin at about 11:00pm then wen i comes to about 12:00am watch a bit off telly maybe stand up comedy cause the noise of the people laughin in the back-ground keeps you awake believe me it does. jus keep loud programmes on your telly cause it keeps your brain alert by all the sounds. massage your eyes and before opening them shake your head tis shud keep you goin for a while if your eyes are tempted to close go outside into the air or look out a window and open your eyes real wide that is a few steps to keep you up all night and im an expert at all-nighters cause i do at least five every week GOOD LUCK PEOPLE by the way im a 13 yr old GIRL xXxXxXxXxXxXxXx

are you sure you are an expert??? i pull out allnighters almost everyday, while lying down in my bed and have NO caffeine what so ever... been doing it for some years now and it seems pointless now, yet, I am addicted to all nighters!
Around 4-6 AM I get up from bed and I excersice - have breakfast, oh its 3:49 already??? Gotta g!

Hello its near 7am now all I do is play on pc games and stuff but usually feel shit after. I'M in a bath atm I recommend original sources shampoo etc man its buzzing lol and its nice and sunny outside now so I might take my daughter to park soon as she is naughty and has been awake all night to I know that's bad she just like me I need to stop her doing it its not good really not if you have 3 daughters like myself x

It is good to put video games on in the background like cod modern warfare 2 because of the shootiing will keep you jumpy. And monster tastes bad but keeps you up. Wow, haha this is really funny. Adderall is terrible for your body if it wasnt prescibed to you it isnt for you. Not that me saying anything will stop you from making a dumb ass move. Red bull, and all that other shit is bad for your body to. Unless you want to gain weight and have a high risk chance of a heart attack. If your going to pull an all nighter sit on the floor and watch tv. Sit in an umcompy position so you cant fall asleep. Read a book, Listen to some music, take a cool shower, walk around your house, play on puter or game system if you have one. But dont eat. Its hard to fall asleep with an empty stomach it hurts and will make you sick. Dont eat, but drink LOTS of cold water. At about 6:30 start your day .

Ehh i suggest gettin ur favorite energy drinks, I kinda hate monster, after if u drink like half of it, it'll taste like crap, and i usually am on the computer for all nighters, watching movies playing some games I installed, sometimes I with a friend or cousin, I'm 12 years old, I Luke stayin up allnight, and I do it so. I can fall asleep like at 9 for skool, it's a great thing to do if u want to fall asleep early. I messed up my sleepin time, I went to sleep at 2 am and woke up t 7 for skoOl, just be active, not to active to get u tired, thatll just make u wanna sleep

Cocaine does help but I can't recommend it because of its addictive potential. If you really want it DO NOT buy it in the ghetto. You wouldn't believe what some pushers put in their "coke." You're lucky to get even 10% pure these days.
Have 12 pages to write in less than 12 hours... My college career depends on it.
My advice to everyone is to avoid situations in which you need to pull an all nighter. But of course if you're reading this then you probably need to stay up for some reason or another. Kids: go to sleep. There's nothing fun about sleep deprivation. You will go crazy.

I usually would do a next-nighter to fix my sleep (it eats away at the metabolism).

An idea: To do this, drink 4-5 cups of coffee.
Play stimulating games(PC), mostly online competition.

DO NOT SLEEP if you go beyond 6 or 8 am. You will probably feel horrible if you drop the next night, practically drains you. NEVER Give up if time slows down, keep downing coffee if you must.

For a consistent, natural sleeping pattern.(early to bed, early to rise):

1.Continue staying up until 8pm or 9pm of the next night, this will give adequate time to reset the sleep.
2.Turn off cell and other distractions. Make sure your sleep has no room for interruption.

By the time you hit the bed you should pass out.

You might wake up energized from a good night's sleep, and if you aren't on the computer the next night you should naturally desire sleep at an earlier time.

5-8am danger hours? they're when im most awake, 11am-1pm can be pretty bad but usually i fall into a fairly chill state for the afternoon 5pm through to 9pm is when it gets really rough til i start nodding into microsleeps. things get pretty weird then, dreaming with my eyes open and stuff. if i can push through til about 1am then i can stay up til 7-9am or even do another day, thats not much fun though.

stayed up all night drinking beer and energy drinks watching a street fighter tournament then did a full day at a building/construction site once, not something i'd want to do again.
over 48hrs for a lan party with copious booze and energy drinks, that was great.

currently 12:43pm, 24h43m awake and counting. last coffee at 1am, cup of tea at 5:15am.

Im prescribed 50mg vyvanse (extended release) and 10 mg adderall (instant release). I would definitely not recommend taking either pill unless prescribed. Not only is the vyvanse very addictive, but I consistently have to visit the doctor for EKGs and actually ended up taking a ride in an ambulance when I was only 17 due to the medications' effect on my heart. There are tons of other side effects as well, including the possibility of it causing bipolar disorder. Don't be stupid and pop this shit for the hell of it, it ain't worth it.

I can't focus with outside noises, unless it's like music, but if it's people barging in my room, I can't focus, so I'm forced to do my homework when everyone else goes to sleep. I usually get about an hour of sleep every night and like, a 3o minute nap when I get home from school. This may sound weird, but the bottom of my laptop is super hot, and after like 30 minutes, I'll set it on my leg. It like, burns me awake, but doesn't actually /burn/ me. It just is hot. I drink a ton of water, so I have to get up and go to the bathroom. Those are my walks because I'm not allowed outside during the night. Redbull and stuff like that have a reverse effect on me and make me drowsy, so I recommend anyone else (especially ADHD people) to skip the redbull and do water or tea, preferably chai or a blend with cinnamon in it. Well, I'm a tea fanatic, so I know a lot about tea.

I am pulling an all-nighter for an important test tomorrow. Yes, I am only 13. And I feel like shit. But here is a good tip: listen to radio, not just your music CD. There could be some chatter, which can keep you awake. Also, make sure your eyes are exposed to light, or you will eventually pass out. Grab a telephone and chill on it to stay awake in bed for quite some time! If you study for sth, then take a 5 mins on the Internet break every 60 minutes. Yeah, much like school classes. Another thing I recommend is massage your eyes with cold water when u feel tired. It works 4 me.

As far as listening to music goes: Try listening to atonal, heavily syncopated and odd metered music. Stay away from "pop" music, simple chord progressions and 4/4 grooves will put you to sleep. Try listening to composers like Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Bartok, Tchaikovsky, and if you're in an anti-semetic mood....Wagner (lol). If classical music doesn't do it for you, John Coltrane's "Interstellar Space" album will keep you going! This is what works well for me. Good luck!

You will look back and think why the hell did I stay up all night?, I wish I still had the useless time now, like i did then. Like I said, you'll have your all nighters when you have children of your own. By the way, I'm a mom of 2 with a 22 month old and a 7 month old both have asthma and do breathing treatments every 3-4 hours and both have bronchitis. So, have fun with your All Nighter Contests when people are actually staying up to be or become a productive member of society, not a child taking adderall that will, in the long run, end up with a possession;;under the influence of a controlled substance;;maintaining a common nuisance;;intent charge...good luck in life.
And just an F.Y.I. I once was a child, drinking energy drinks all the time and hallucinating from staying up well past what I should have. Now, i suffer from seizures which never has been in my family and anxiety and depression which I have to be medicated for all. So pop your pills and drink your booze, because one day you will see the what your idiotic childhood choices do to you that last your entire life. So good luck in life. I hope you realize one day you will have to pull an all nighter because your infant is sick or just won't sleep and your bed will be your biggest enemy. I just hope you "11, 12, 13 and 14 year olds" get ahold of your life before it's too late. Jails are too over crowded and they'll just send you right to prison over your one little adderall for your pointless all night contest with your "bff". Good Luck.
