Majority of Americans Support Budget Compromise

Abacus - Illustration According to a recent Gallup.com poll, 58% of Americans said that they were in favor of a budget compromise that would avert a government shutdown, even if it meant passing a budget that they disagreed with.

33% of those surveyed in the poll, on the other hand, don't want their party to compromise, even if it results in a partial shutdown of the federal government.

According to Gallup.com, 68% of Democrats are in favor of a budget compromise that would avoid a government shutdown. 60% of Independents surveyed were open to a compromise, while just 44% of Republicans were willing to consider a compromise.

27% of Democrats are willing to stick to their guns and get the budget plan that they want, even if it means that the federal government partially shuts down. 29% of Independents feel the same way, while over half of the Republicans surveyed (51%) don't want to see their party compromise in order to avoid a shutdown.

Which party is doing the better job when it comes to agreeing on a new federal budget?

According to Gallup.com, 41% of those surveyed said that they believed that President Obama and the Democrats were doing a better job, while just 34% sided with the Republicans. This is a noticeable swing from February 22nd, when 39% of those surveyed at the time backed the Democrats, while 42% backed the Republicans.

It shouldn't be a surprise to hear that 83% of Democrats feel that their party is doing the better job, while 81% of Republicans surveyed said they believed that their party was being more effective.

--

It's not all good news for President Obama though, as 45% of those surveyed said that Obama and the Democrats' proposed spending cuts have not gone far enough. 15% of those surveyed said that the proposed cuts from the Democrats go too far, while 26% said that the cuts were just right.

On the other hand, 30% of those surveyed said that the proposed cuts from the Republicans are not enough. 32% said that the proposed Republican cuts go too far, while 22% said that the cuts are just right.

--

Will there be a partial shutdown of the federal government or will a late deal be struck? We'll soon find out..
