Thumbs Down Given to Both Republicans and Democrats
When it comes to the contentious debt ceiling issue, which party is winning in the eyes of the average American?
The answer - neither.
According to a CBS News poll that was released this morning, 58% of Americans disapprove of the way that Democrats in Congress have been handling the debt ceiling negotiations, while just 31% approve.
The Republican numbers are even worse - 71% of those included in the poll said that they disapprove of how the party is handling the debt ceiling negotiations, while just 21% said that they approve.
How about President Obama and his handling of the situation?
Of the 810 people that were included in the CBS News poll, 43% said that they approve of the way that Obama is handling the debt ceiling situation, while 48% said that they disapprove. As you can imagine, the Republican voters that were included in the survey were strongly against Obama (81% disapproval of his handling of the situation), while 69% of Democrats said that they were backing Obama.
The majority of the Independents that were included in the survey (52%) said that they disapprove of how President Obama is handling the negotiations.

In the end, the majority of Americans believe that a debt ceiling deal will be reached before the August 2nd deadline.
According to the CBS News poll, 66% of Americans believe that a deal will "probably" be reached before August 2nd, while 31% believe that a deal will probably not be struck between the two sides by that date.
