Ron Paul's Portfolio: An Apocalyptic Vision of the Future

Ron Paul’s Portfolio is Heavy on Gold

Take a look at Ron Paul’s portfolio and you will clearly see that the man is very worried about the future of the United States.

This is certainly not a surprise to anybody that has followed Ron Paul for any period of time, as he has always been very vocal about how worried he is about the future direction of the country.

In recent months, Paul (who is currently running for the Republican Presidential nomination) has stated that he believes that inflation will hit 50% “over the next couple of years”, and that the United States dollar will rapidly fall in value. Ron Paul contends (and it’s hard to argue) that the massive debt that the country has accumulated is out-of-control and that the United States is currently standing in front of a very dark precipice.

If you believe that inflation is going to hit 50% over the next few years, what would you want to own?

Ron Paul’s portfolio has exposure to gold and plenty of it.

Ron Paul currently has a net worth of between $1.92 and $5.2 million, and most of that net worth is tied up in gold-related holdings. Paul also has stakes in a couple of property management firms as well.

Here are Ron Paul’s top five holdings as of 2010:

Goldcorp Inc - $500,001 - $1,000,000
Carona Ltd - $250,001 - $500,000
First National Bank of Lake Jackson - $250,001 - $500,000
Newmont Mining Corp - $250,001 - $500,000
Iamgold Corp - $250,001 - $500,000

Note: Carona Ltd. is a property management firm

Paul had a total of 41 different assets as of 2010, and most of these assets have some connection to gold (gold miners, etc.)

Paul also owns a couple of assets that do well in a falling market:

Rydex Inverse S&P 500 Strategy
Rydex Inverse Nasdaq 1002x CL H
Federated Prudent Bear Fund

Ron Paul is putting his money where his mouth is. He is clearly very worried about the future direction of the country, and he has invested his money in a way that will protect him if inflation does soar and the bottom does drop out of the US dollar.

If these holdings don’t scream bearish bias to you, I don’t know what will. According to William Bernstein of Efficient Portfolio Advisors, Ron Paul’s portfolio “is a half-step away from a cellar-full of canned goods and nine-millimeter rounds”.
