Definition of Black Thursday
What does the term "Black Thursday" mean? What is the definition of the term "Black Thursday"?
The term "Black Thursday" is relatively new, having only been coined over the last couple of years.
In order to understand what "Black Thursday" means, we first need to define the more commonly used "Black Friday".
"Black Friday" is the day after Thanksgiving, and is one of the biggest shopping days of the year. "Black Friday" got its name from the fact that many retailers switch from a loss from the year ("in the red") to a profit ("in the black") on Black Friday.
Now, retailers have exploiting "Black Friday" more and more. Opening up at midnight on "Black Friday" is no longer enough - some large retailers (including Sears and Target) are now opening at 8 pm on Thanksgiving Day.
"Black Friday" has now spilled over into Thanksgiving, which is why Thanksgiving Day is now being referred to as "Black Thursday". Some stores, believe it or not, are now opening on Thanksgiving Day.
