What does the term "GOP" mean? What is meant by the term "GOP"?

The Republican party in the United States is often referred to as the "GOP". "GOP" (pronounced Gee-Oh-Pea) stands for "Grand Old Party".

However, according to the official GOP website, "GOP" first meant "gallant old party", and eventually changed to "Grand Old Party" throughout the years.

The Republican Party was initially founded back in 1854 by anti-slavery activists. The party has produced 18 Presidents since 1854, including the likes of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. The current Speaker of the House (John Boehner) is a Republican. A majority of the governorships in the United States are currently held by the Republican party.

The GOP advocates for lower taxes, smaller government and a strong military.
