Jerry Jones currently has a net worth of an estimated:
Jerry Jones - just the name will evoke a host of different emotions from people.
Jerry Jones is frequently referred to as one of the most unpopular owners in sports. The thing is, Jones is not unpopular with the majority of Dallas Cowboys fans - instead, he is despised by fans of OTHER teams. That should give you an indication as to just how phenomenally successful Jones has been during his run as the owner of the Dallas Cowboys. You don't get to be despised by fans of the NFL's other 31 teams if you are not a success.
Jerry Jones is an entrepreneur, first and foremost. After receiving his Master's degree in business in 1970, Jones launched Jones Oil and Land Lease. This company would become phenomenally successful, expanding rapidly during the '70s and '80s.
Jones would parlay his "Jones Oil and Land Lease" success into a purchase of the Dallas Cowboys. On February 25th, 1989, Jones agreed to purchase the Dallas Cowboys from H.R. "Bum" Bright for $140 million ($258.78 million in today's dollars). Jones would use his substantial business acumen to build the Cowboys' into the NFL's most valuable franchise.
The Cowboys enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in the early to mid '90s, winning the Super Bowl three times. The Cowboys had always been a household name, but this success helped introduce the team to a legion of new fans.
The league has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success over the past 20+ years, and some of this can be attributed to Jerry Jones. Jones has always looked to increase the Cowboys' revenue streams, and many of these innovations have been adopted by other teams.
In addition, the fortunes of the league has increased significantly over the past few decades due to lucrative TV deals. Based on already signed deals, the league is going to receive approximately $6 billion PER YEAR from their deals with NFC, Fox, CBS, ESPN and DirecTV as of 2014. These revenues are split evenly between each of the league's 32 teams, meaning that the Cowboys will receive approximately $200 million per year just from TV rights. That's $200 million per year before a single ticket or jersey is sold.
Speaking of tickets, the Dallas Cowboys are a revenue generating machine thanks to their impressive new Cowboys Stadium. The venue seats 111,000 people, which makes the Cowboys a cash cow at the turnstiles.
According to Forbes, the Cowboys are currently generating $500 million PER YEAR in revenue, creating operating income of around $226 million. The team receives $80 million per year in annual sponsorship revenue for their stadium from the likes of Ford Motor, Bank of America and PepsiCo. Add in an estimated $80 million in merchandise revenue (the Cowboys distribute their own merchandise), as well as ticket receipts, suites, TV rights and stadium advertising, and you have a business that generates $500 million per year.
The Dallas Cowboys are currently valued at $2.1 billion, up 14% over last year.
The next closest NFL team in terms of value is the New England Patriots, who are currently worth a reported $1.635 billion.
Let's be honest - I can't see Jones ever selling the Dallas Cowboys. If he did decide that he wanted to sell them right at this instant, I highly doubt that he would part with them for anything less than $3 billion. Given the available numbers, I think that the $2 billion value that people have affixed to the Cowboys is low - given their brand and the immense amount of revenue (and profit) that they generate on a yearly basis, I would put their value at $3 billion.
Given this information, I am comfortable saying that Jones' net worth is probably somewhere in the $3.2 - $3.5 billion range.
