Definition of AltCoin

What does the term "AltCoin" mean? What is meant by the term "altcoin"?

The term "altcoin" is used to describe any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization and still garners the most coverage from the mainstream media.

Every other cryptocurrency, including the likes of Ethereum, Dogecoin and Litecoin (just to name a few), can be referred to as an "altcoin".

The term "altcoin" is seen as a slight by some to the likes of Ethereum, which has a market capitalization that is nearly half that of Bitcoin.

In the end, some "altcoins" are just blatant imitations of Bitcoin, with no increased functionality, while other cryptocurrencies are truly pushing the boundaries of innovation.
