Information:

Reed Hastings is one of those people who loves to work hard and build things.

After all, Hastings was already a multi-millionaire when his company, Pure Atria (originally known as Pure Software) was purchased by Rational Software back in 1997. Hastings had run the company for six years, learning on the fly as the company grew from tiny (10 employees) to quite large. There were some very stressful years for Hastings between 1991-1997, and nobody would have blamed him if he had decided to take his millions and walk off into the sunset, never to be heard from again.

Instead, Hastings left Rational Software and decided to start Netflix along with Marc Randolph in 1998. The company, which has turned out to be truly revolutionary and disruptive, was laughed at when it first came to market. A subscription DVD program? That would never work. According to former Netflix CEO Barry McCarthy, Netflix pitched a partnership offer to Blockbuster back in 2000 and were "nearly laughed out of the office". There weren't many believers of Netflix 12 or 13 years ago.

Of course, this has all changed dramatically in recent years. The success of Netflix has helped to bury companies such as Blockbuster, and online video streaming has become a mainstay in our culture. At any given moment of the day, Netflix accounts for a very large chunk of overall Internet traffic. Millions of people are loyal subscribers to Netflix, and that number continues to grow with each passing day.

In recent years, the company has set out on a path to become an "online HBO", developing their own shows such as "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black". Both have received their share of critical acclaim, and their success is changing the entire entertainment landscape.

All of this is typical Reed Hastings. Hastings is not afraid to dream big, and he is not afraid to stick his neck out when he believes in something. Sure, Hastings and Netflix will stumble sometimes (such as the critically panned decision to split their DVD subscription and streaming subscriptions into two different products a few years ago) , but the overall trajectory for the company has been up.

Considering that Hastings co-founded Netflix, he does not own all that many shares in the company, at least compared to other founders of successful public companies.

According to his most recent SEC filing, Hastings owned a total of 931,660 shares of the company.
