Forget Optimizing Your Homepage; The Real Money is in your Subpages

Sometimes I really can't believe how much people agonize over optimizing their home page just the right amount.

I need to have the perfect % of keywords that I am targeting on the main page.

I need to have the perfect title.

I need to have the perfect combination of keywords enclosed inside H1, H2, and H3 tags.

It goes on and on.

If you have a one page site that you are trying to optimize for the search engines, then fine. However, if you run a blog and plan on having a great deal of content, forget about optimizing your front page. Aside from choosing suitable titles for each article, forget about optimizing your subpages as well. All you need to do is write. Write some more. And after that, write even more.

The real money is going to be in your subpages. We run over 30 sites, and I have to say that after 9 years, 95% of our revenues come from our subpages. This is just fact. Our main page simply exists to provide a roadmap for the search engines to properly index our site. People find our site through our articles; they don't find the index page and then visit our articles for the most part.

Google rewards sites that are naturally built. As soon as we stopped worrying about optimization and started worrying about producing unique and interesting content, our network took off. If we had spent our entire time fiddling around with our home page, trying to find that perfect mix of keyword density and anchor text, we wouldn't be nearly as far along as we are now.

Your best strategy is to produce unique content. You will start to develop one way deep-links to your site (the best kind), and your sites will start to make their way higher in the search engines.

Don't tear your hair out trying to perfectly optimize your home page. Just write.
