Definition of Nation Building

What is nation building? What is the definition of the term nation building?

Nation building occurs when a country's infrastructure is rebuilt by another country after a war.

Let's say that two countries, the United States and Iraq, enter into a one-sided conflict. Within a matter of days, the United States has flattened the infrastructure of Iraq and basically destroyed the country.

At this point, the "winning" coalition or country will usually embark upon a nation building campaign to repair the "losing" countries' shattered infrastructure. This usually runs into the many billions of dollars.

The term "nation building" generally has a negative connotation.
