Dana White, born July 28th, 1969 in Manchester, Connecticut, is the current President of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).
Prior to becoming President of the UFC, Dana White worked as a boxing and aerobics instructor. White became involved in the world of mixed martial arts when he began managing Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell, who would go on to become two of the sport's biggest stars.
While serving as a manager to Ortiz and Liddell, White became aware that Semaphore Entertainment Group, former parent company of the UFC, was looking for a buyer for the mixed martial arts organization. Dana contacted one of his old childfriend friends, Lorenzo Fertitta (of Station Casinos), about the possibility of purchasing the UFC. Lorenzo, along with his brother Frank, bought the UFC for $2 million a short while later. Dana White was named President and reportedly given 10% of Zuffa, LLC, which was the company that Lorenzo and Frank formed to purchase the UFC.
The Fertitta's purchase of the UFC was completed in January of 2001.
The UFC lost tens of millions of dollars before finally turning around and growing into the multi-billion dollar organization that it is today. Some of the key inflection points for the UFC were:
-return to pay-per-view shortly after Zuffa, LLC purchased the company
-UFC 40 (Ortiz vs Shamrock)
-The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 finale (Griffin vs Bonnar)
-UFC 66 (Ortiz vs Liddell)
-purchase of PRIDE (rival organization)
-emergence of Georges St. Pierre and Brock Lesnar as megastars
-UFC 100 (biggest PPV in the history of the UFC)
-UFC 134 (first event in Brazil since 1998)
The company has slowly but surely won mainstream acceptance and regulatory approval, and is now sanctioned in nearly every US state (New York is a notable exception) and many countries throughout the world.
Zuffa, LLC is a privately held company, but here is the widely rumored ownership structure:
Lorenzo Fertitta - 40.5%
Frank Fertitta III - 40.5%
Flash Entertainment - 10%
Dana White - 9%
Flash Entertainment bought a 10% stake in Zuffa, LLC in early 2010. The purchase amount has not been disclosed.
So what is the UFC worth?
In 2008, Forbes valued the company at "$1 billion-plus", based on estimated sales of $250 million. The UFC did 5.1 million PPV buys in 2007.
The sport is significantly bigger now than it was in 2007. The emergence of stars such as Georges St. Pierre (hiatus), Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar (retired) have helped push the UFC to even greater heights.
In addition, the UFC has found significant new markets in Canada, Sweden, Australia and Brazil, and is also in the midst of a seven-year deal with Fox that reportedly pays the UFC $100 million per year.
It's safe to say that the UFC has increased in value since 2007.
Taking into account the Fox deal, the recently announced Reebok deal, the UFC Fight Pass product, the incursion into wildly successful new markets (Canada, Brazil, Australia), the upcoming move into new, potentially lucrative markets (India, China) and the company's $425 million term loan that is due in 2015, I would guess that the UFC currently has a value of $1.5 billion+. Sure, their PPV numbers are down considerably from the "glory days" of 2009 and 2010 but they do have a "next breed" of superstars that include the likes of Jon Jones, Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor.
A valuation of $1.5 billion would value Dana White's stake in the company at $135,000,000.
Dana White is worth 1,746 times more than the median US household
If Dana White sold everything that they owned, they could fund the United States' deficit spending for 0 days.
