Definition of Compulsive Shopper
What is a "compulsive shopper"? What is the definition of the term "compulsive shopper"?
A "compulsive shopper" is somebody who can not control the impulse to buy.
Let's say that the average person goes to the mall to buy a light bulb. As they are walking by a clothing store, they see an expensive item that they like. The average person will say "That looks cool, but I don't have the money to buy it right now. Maybe another time."
The compulsive shopper will see the same item and HAVE to buy it, regardless of whether or not they can afford it. On top of that, the compulsive shopper will likely return home with many other items as well.
Because compulsive shoppers can not control their impulses, they will usually rack up thousands of dollars (or more) in credit card debt. Compulsive shoppers usually don't stop until they hit rock bottom (max out credit cards, alienate friends and family, etc.)
Compulsive shopping is an addiction that must be treated. Like any other addicts, compulsive shoppers run the very real risk of ruining their own lives and those of the people around them.
