Definition of Constituent



What does the term "constituent" mean? What is meant by the term "constituent"?

A constituent is any person that is an eligible voter. It also means any eligible voter that is impacted by government policy.

When a senator talks about his/her "constituents", they are referring to the eligible voters that reside in their state.

Senators and members of the House of Representatives will always fight hard for their constituents, as senators and members of the House want to get elected.

If their constituents feel as though they are doing a good job and looking out for their interests, then there is a great chance that they will win re-election.

A 24 year-old lawyer is considered a "constituent", as they are eligible to vote.

A 15 year-old student, on the other hand, is not considered a constituent, as they are not yet old enough to vote.
