01Overview

Our base-case estimate of Eric Schmidt's net worth is $41.1 billion. Most of it is still Google: about 43.4 million Alphabet voting shares1 and, in our assumed minimum-holding scenario, about 39.5 million non-voting Class C shares, together worth $26.4 billion at the October 23, 2026 closes. The next biggest piece is a reported stake of about 1% in Anthropic4, the artificial intelligence company, worth about $9.7 billion at its May 2026 funding value.

Schmidt was Google's chief executive from 2001 to 2011, taking it through its 2004 IPO, then its executive chairman until 2018. He has been selling and giving away shares since at least 2010. Since he left Alphabet's board in 2019 his trades no longer have to be reported one by one, which makes him one of the harder big fortunes to pin down.

The published estimates are far apart. Forbes had him at $36.3 billion on October 24, 2026; Bloomberg's index, which says it counts about 80 million Class C shares from a 2019 filing, had $64.6 billion. Our selected scenarios, $31.4 billion to $53.9 billion, show how much turns on two numbers nobody outside the family can see: his Class C share count and his Anthropic stake. They are not a full range; actual wealth could fall outside them.

02Reconcile the Estimate

Schmidt left Alphabet's board in June 2019, so he no longer files a Form 4 for every trade. His last ownership filing, a Schedule 13G/A for June 30, 2025, lists 48,808,584 voting shares (Class A, counting Class B as converted)1, of which 5,369,547 belong to three Schmidt charities. The non-voting Class C shares have not been reported since February 2019, when he held 79,984,300 (as adjusted for the 2022 split)2. A 2014 agreement with Google, if it is still in force, bars him from selling Class C shares if that would leave him with more Class B than Class C3, and his 2019 holdings sat right at that line, so our base case is an assumed minimum-holding scenario: about as many Class C shares as Class B, 39,507,677. The agreement allows him to hold more; it does not show that he holds exactly the minimum.

Alphabet at the October 23, 2026 closes of $320.21 (Class A, also used for Class B) and $317.28 (Class C); Anthropic at its May 2026 Series H value; homes and Relativity at cost. Two selected scenarios: $31.4 billion leaves out the unconfirmed Anthropic stake; $53.9 billion counts all 79,984,300 Class C shares from 2019. They do not capture every uncertainty listed below, so actual wealth could fall outside them.

Not observable: any Alphabet shares sold or given away since June 30, 2025 (his Class A and B holdings fell by 8.1 million shares in the first half of 2025 alone); his actual Class C count; whether he has sold any Anthropic shares (a sale would turn part of the stake into cash, not remove it); what Relativity Space, D. E. Shaw and his venture investments are worth; how he has spent or reinvested his sale proceeds; and any personal debt, none of which is disclosed.

Bloomberg's profile says it counts about 49 million Class A and B shares and about 80 million Class C shares from a 2019 filing, plus his sale proceeds, Hillspire's 20% stake in D. E. Shaw and Relativity Space. Its October 19, 2026 article put him at $57.5 billion before the Anthropic stake. Forbes' profile notes his Alphabet stake and the 20% D. E. Shaw stake his family office bought in 2015, but does not mention Anthropic or Relativity Space and does not publish a share count. Our base case counts the Class A and B shares in his latest filing, uses an assumed minimum-holding scenario for Class C (about half the 2019 count), and adds Anthropic at its last funding value.

05Assets and Liabilities

Schmidt's wealth is mostly Alphabet stock in three classes, valued at the October 23, 2026 closes, plus a reported Anthropic stake and the proceeds of years of selling. Every $10 move in Alphabet changes his net worth by about $0.83 billion on our share counts.

EducationBSE, electrical engineering, Princeton University, 1976; MS 1979 and PhD 1982, electrical engineering and computer science, University of California, Berkeley
Early careerSun Microsystems, 1983-1997 (chief technology officer from 1994); chairman and CEO of Novell, 1997-2001
Current roleCEO of Relativity Space since March 10, 2025

09Background and Google

Schmidt trained as an engineer (Princeton, then a Berkeley PhD in 1982), spent 14 years at Sun Microsystems, where he became chief technology officer, and ran Novell from 1997. Google's investors wanted an experienced chief executive beside its young founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and Schmidt took the job in August 2001. He ran the company through its 2004 IPO and the years in which it became the dominant search and advertising business, then handed the CEO role back to Page in 2011 and stayed on as executive chairman until January 2018.

10Selling Down

Fifteen years of trading plans

Schmidt has sold Google stock under pre-arranged trading plans since at least 2010. A plan disclosed in February 2012 covered 2.4 million shares, which was expected to cut his stake from 2.8% to 2.1%, and one announced in February 2013 covered 3.2 million shares, about 42% of what he then owned. Those are pre-2014 shares; each one is now 20 Class A or B shares and 20 Class C shares. Bloomberg estimates he has collected about $7.9 billion from selling Google stock.6

What the filings still show

Because he is no longer an insider, the only regular disclosure is a Schedule 13G covering his voting shares. Together with his final Form 4, the filings show his Class B shares falling from about 79.9 million in early 2019 to 47.5 million at the end of 2024 and 39.5 million on June 30, 2025.1 That June 2025 filing reported he owned under 5% of the Class B shares and none had been filed since as of October 25, 2026. Class C shares carry no vote and are not covered by it, so the last count is from his final Form 4, in February 2019.2

11After Google

Anthropic

Schmidt was an early backer of Anthropic, investing in its 2021 Series A. On October 19, 2026, Bloomberg reported that he owns about 1% of the company, which would be worth about $9.7 billion at the $965 billion value of its May 2026 funding round and more if its planned stock market listing values it higher. Bloomberg said it was unclear whether he had sold any shares; a sale would turn part of the stake into cash rather than remove it from his fortune. Schmidt and Anthropic declined to comment.4

Rockets, hedge funds and AI

In March 2025 Schmidt took a controlling stake in Relativity Space, a Long Beach rocket maker, and became its chief executive; Bloomberg reported in December 2025 that he had provided nearly $800 million. His family office, Hillspire, bought 20% of the hedge fund D. E. Shaw in 2015, and he invests in startups through Innovation Endeavors and Hillspire. None of these holdings has a public value, so apart from Relativity at cost we do not count them.

Homes and giving

The Schmidts have spent at least $367 million since 2020 on the homes whose prices have been reported, most recently $110 million for Spelling Manor in Los Angeles in 2025, after selling their longtime Atherton house for $22.5 million in 2024. Their charities, including the Schmidt Family Foundation, the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fund for Strategic Innovation and the Schmidt Ocean Institute, reported about $3.69 billion of assets for 2024. We leave those out because the money has been given away.

12How We Model the Cash

A simplified model, not a reconstruction of his actual taxes and remaining assets.

StepAmount
Google stock sale proceeds, as estimated by Bloomberg6$7.90B
Assumed tax, flat 37.1% (federal, net investment income and California)-$2.93B
Relativity Space, counted separately at cost-$0.80B
Homes with reported prices, counted separately at cost-$0.37B
Other spending, gifts, taxes above or below our assumption, and investment gains or lossesUnknown, not modeled
Modeled residual: cash and investments$3.80B

The purchase cost of the D. E. Shaw stake and his venture investments is not public, so it is not subtracted. If they were paid for out of these proceeds, their cost is in effect still inside the residual; we do not value them on top of it.

14Frequently Asked Questions

What is Eric Schmidt's net worth?

Our base-case estimate is $41.1 billion at October 23, 2026 prices, with selected scenarios of $31.4 billion to $53.9 billion; actual wealth could fall outside them. Forbes had him at $36.3 billion on October 24, 2026, and the Bloomberg Billionaires Index at $64.6 billion on its profile as read on October 25, 2026.

How much Alphabet stock does Eric Schmidt own?

His latest filing, for June 30, 2025, shows 48,808,584 Class A and Class B shares, of which 5,369,547 are held by his charities. He also owns non-voting Class C shares; the last reported count was 79,984,300 in February 2019, and our base case assumes about 39.5 million now, the minimum-holding scenario. We value his Alphabet stake at $26.4 billion at the October 23, 2026 closes.

Does Eric Schmidt own part of Anthropic?

Bloomberg reported on October 19, 2026 that he owns about 1% of Anthropic from an early investment, which would be worth about $9.7 billion at the company's $965 billion May 2026 valuation. Neither Schmidt nor Anthropic has confirmed it.

Is Eric Schmidt still at Google?

No. He was CEO from 2001 to 2011 and executive chairman until January 2018, left Alphabet's board on June 19, 2019, and ended his role as a technical adviser in 2020. Since March 2025 he has been chief executive of Relativity Space.

Why do Forbes and Bloomberg disagree so much about him?

Neither has a current Class C count to work from, because those shares have not been reported since February 2019. Bloomberg says it counts about 80 million Class C shares from a 2019 filing plus his stake in D. E. Shaw; Forbes does not say how many shares it counts. Our estimate falls between them.

15Sources and Method

This is a sum-of-the-parts estimate. Alphabet Class A and B shares come from Schmidt's Schedule 13G/A for June 30, 2025, his latest, leaving out the 5,369,547 shares held by his charities; Class B shares are valued at the Class A close of $320.21. Class C shares have not been reported since February 2019, so our base case uses an assumed minimum-holding scenario of 39,507,677, the same as his Class B count and the fewest a 2014 transfer agreement with Google allows if it is still in force; his 2019 holdings were at that level, but he may hold more. They are valued at the Class C close of $317.28. Anthropic is counted at about 1% of its $965 billion May 2026 funding value, as reported by Bloomberg. Cash is a simplified model: Bloomberg's estimate of about $7.9 billion of sale proceeds, less a flat assumed 37.1% tax and the money we can see he has spent on Relativity Space and homes, which are counted at cost. That gives a base case of $41.1 billion.

Two selected scenarios show the effect of the biggest unknowns: $31.4 billion leaves out the unconfirmed Anthropic stake, and $53.9 billion assumes he still owns all 79,984,300 Class C shares reported in 2019. They are not a full range; actual wealth could fall outside them. We do not count his charities, the D. E. Shaw stake or venture holdings without a public value, and we do not deduct taxes he would owe if he sold. Later sales would reduce the Alphabet holding shown here, but the proceeds may remain in cash or other investments; gifts, taxes, spending and investment returns decide the effect on his total net worth.

1 Schedule 13G/A Amendment No. 21, event date June 30, 2025, filed August 14, 2025: 48,808,584 Class A shares counting 39,507,677 Class B as converted, including 5,369,547 Class A shares held by three Schmidt charities. No later filing had been made as of October 25, 2026.

2 Schmidt's final Form 4, filed February 27, 2019: 3,999,215 Class C shares, or 79,984,300 after Alphabet's July 2022 20-for-1 split, held directly, in the Schmidt Family Living Trust and in two Schmidt Investments partnerships.

3 Transfer Restriction Agreement of March 25, 2014 between Google, Schmidt, his family trust and two Schmidt Investments partnerships: they may not sell non-voting (Class C) shares if that would leave them with more Class B than non-voting shares. It ends if their voting power falls below 2% of Alphabet's total; by our calculation from the percentages in his 2025 filing, it was between about 2.8% and 3% in mid-2025. No change to the agreement has been disclosed; it can also be ended by agreement of all the parties.

4 Bloomberg, October 19, 2026: Schmidt owns around 1% of Anthropic thanks to his early investment; it is unclear whether he has sold any of the stake. Schmidt and Anthropic declined to comment.

5 Anthropic announced its Series H on May 28, 2026: $65 billion raised at a $965 billion post-money valuation.

6 Bloomberg Billionaires Index profile, accessed October 25, 2026: about $7.9 billion collected from the sale of Google stock, based on company filings and Bloomberg data.
