Where Your Canadian Tax Dollars Go
Federal Tax Bill Breakdown - Fiscal Year 2026-27
01Calculate Your Tax Dollar Breakdown
Note: This breakdown shows federal government spending only. Provincial and territorial spending (including most healthcare delivery) is separate and funded through provincial taxes.
An illustration, not a trace: The calculator applies the 2026-27 spending mix to your tax bill in proportion. Federal income tax goes into the government's general revenue and is not earmarked for any program; Employment Insurance benefits are paid from EI premiums, and part of federal spending is paid for by borrowing. So the dollar amounts show your share of the spending mix, not where any particular dollar of your tax went.

How the shares are built: Each share is a category's portion of $565.7 billion in planned 2026-27 federal spending: the 2026-27 Main Estimates ($502.8 billion, tabled February 2026) plus Employment Insurance benefits ($31.9 billion) and the Canada Child Benefit ($31.0 billion), which the Estimates report as paid outside them (Table 4). Categories group the Estimates by organization, with the Department of Finance and Employment and Social Development Canada split by their individual statutory items and core responsibilities. Shares are rounded to 0.1% and add to 100.0%.
